The Sydney Roosters have rewarded hard working NYC halfback Tyler Cornish with a two year NRL contract starting in 2015.
The new deal will see nineteen year-old Tyler continue his progress with the Roosters and is in keeping with the club’s policy of encouraging young and developing talent.
Currently in his second season as a member of the club’s NYC side, of which he is vice -captain, the youngster grew up idolising Roosters immortal Brad Fittler.
“Tyler’s development has been progressing nicely. Mature, composed and a hard worker on and off the field, Tyler is an instinctive ball player and he certainly exemplifies the sort of footballer that could make the successful transition to the NRL,” said Sydney Roosters Chief Operating Officer Football, Brian Canavan.
After impressing over the past few seasons, the younger brother of rising Canberra playmaker Mitch Cornish now has the chance to make a name for himself in the red, white and blue.
Like all young promising athletes Cornish was unsure about his future but that all changed after a quick call from his manager to go and see the Roosters General Manager Player List and Recruitment, Peter O’Sullivan.
“I was very nervous going to see Sully, it could have been good or bad news but when he gave me the good news I was speechless,” Cornish said.
“My family were really stoked with the news, they love the Roosters and the club really looks after all the players and their families so I couldn’t be happier.”
With a number of big name rising stars around him in the NYC competition Cornish was confident he would get noticed if he did all the simple things right.
“I knew if I worked hard and did everything right week to week they would notice me and that my time would eventually come,” Cornish said.
Despite the great news the young halfback still knows there is a long path ahead if he wants to play at the top level.
“The deal is great but I haven’t cracked it yet and I don’t want to look to far ahead,” he said.
“Hopefully I can get a start at the Jets and play some consistent footy and hopefully one day get a crack at the top.”
