The Sydney Roosters have been deeply saddened to hear of the passing of rugby league icon and former club official, Ron Massey.

Ron first came to prominence in rugby league circles as the right-hand man to legendary coach Jack Gibson, and he will always hold a special place in Roosters history for his integral contribution to the Club’s success throughout that era, most notably with the Eastern Suburbs premierships in 1974-75.

“On behalf of our Chairman, Nick Politis AM, and the Sydney Roosters Board, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Massey family at Ron’s passing,” said Roosters CEO, John Lee.

“It was during the 1970s that the dynamic duo of Jack Gibson and Ron Massey forged a successful partnership which culminated in the first grade Eastern Suburbs Roosters premierships of 1974-75,” he added.

Russell Fairfax was a member of the Roosters premiership-winning side in 1974, missing the 1975 decider through injury. He today extended his condolences to the Massey family.

“I know I speak on behalf of everyone involved with the Roosters when I say how saddened we have all been to hear the news of Ron’s passing,” said Fairfax.

“I have many fond memories of that great era of the Roosters history, and Ron was a huge part of that. Ron had a great understanding of not only the game, but us as players, and he and Jack were like brothers.

“Ron was a terrific man, and will be sorely missed by everyone in the rugby league community,” he added.

Together with Gibson, Ron was also a key contributor to Parramatta’s premiership success from 1981-83.

The Sydney Roosters extend their heartfelt sympathies to the many family and friends of Ron Massey at this sad time.
