CLUB WEEKEND RESULTS – 1st February

Four of the six NSWRL junior representative competitions got under way on the weekend, featuring four of the seven Roosters junior representative sides.

The Laurie Daley Cup and the Andrew Johns Cup competitions will commence on Saturday, 8th February, when the two Central Coast Roosters sides will match up against the Northern Tigers in their Round One matches at Scully Park, Tamworth.

S.G. Ball Cup

The Roosters S.G. Ball (Men’s Under 19s) team commenced their season in style, with a 56-12 victory over the North Sydney Bears at Kenthurst. Despite missing key backs Toby Rodwell, Cohen Dittman, Lui Lee and Demetrius Kilisimasi, as well as new forward recruit Itula Seve, the Roosters ran in ten tries to two, after leading 32-6 at half time.

There were many outstanding performers for the Roosters, but none better than hooker and captain Jaxson Allen. Right winger Mikey Nassar scored four tries and carried the ball strongly from inside the Roosters own half, whilst half back Tyson Walker, younger brother of Roosters NRL half Sam, could not have made a stronger debut. He scored a try, kicked 8 goals from 10 attempts for a match tally of 20 points, but more impressive were his five try involvements, including four try assists. The Roosters middle forwards, off the superb service of Jaxson Allen, set up a great platform for the Roosters backs and edge forwards, allowing them to take full advantage of the space created by those middles.

The Roosters next take on the Parramatta Eels at Mascot, who were big winners themselves in Round One, defeating the Newcastle Knights 36-10.

Harold Matthews Cup

Round One of the Harold Matthews (Men’s Under 17s) Cup competition saw the Sydney Roosters play the North Sydney Bears at Kenthurst, whilst the Central Coast Roosters had an opening round bye.

The Sydney Roosters looked headed for a comfortable victory over the Bears, when leading 26-16 with less than ten minutes remaining. However, the Bears scored two late tries to lock the scores up at 26-26 going into the final minute when a penalty for attacking the legs of the kicker went against the Roosters and the ensuing penalty goal gave the Bears a 28-26 victory.

Despite the loss there was some promising signs from some of the young Roosters. Prop Charleston Te Rore, who played Matthews Cup last season with the Central Coast Roosters, had some very strong carries, highlighted by a 57 metre solo try where he broke though the heart of the Bears defence. It was one of two tries he scored. Fellow Kiwi Bastion Armstrong, playing left centre, impressed with all aspects of his game. MVP in the New Zealand Under 16s Boys tournament in October, Armstrong scored a try in the first half and threw the pass for one of the other Roosters first half tries.

The Sydney Roosters play the Parramatta Eels at Mascot in Round Two. The Eels beat the Knights 24-20 in their opening round match. The Central Coast Roosters will open their season in Round Two with a match against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Brookvale, who lost their Round One match 28-10 to the New Zealand Warriors.

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy Tarsha Gale (Women’s Under 19s) Cup side have commenced their 2025 season with a disappointing 12-10 loss to the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown. It was a very frustrating match with both sides turning over a lot of ball, but particularly the Roosters, who struggled to complete many sets at all. One bright spot for the Roosters was the form of left centre Katelyn Whitehead in defence and right centre Tyra Ekepati in attack.

Coach Keeley Davis and Assistant Coach Corban Baxter will have a busy week working on the Roosters handling and pass selection before they take on the Newcastle Knights next Saturday at Mascot.

Lisa Fiaola Cup

The Central Coast Roosters impressed many with their 28-0 opening round win over the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown. The Roosters, who led 10-0 at half time, scored six tries to nil, and look headed for a very strong season. There was little doubt regarding the player of the match. Five Eighth and captain Mia Vaotuua was involved in five of the Roosters’ six tries, scoring three herself and throwing the final pass for two others. Prop Kewa Kahuroa was also very strong and scored a fine solo try midway through the second half, whilst right centre Marley Gristwood scored two tries and made a number of strong surges into the Wests Tigers defensive line.

The Roosters play the Newcastle Knights in Round Two, at Mascot, in what promises to be an early season stern test for the young Roosters. The Knights won their opening round clash 48-0 over the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
