Les Cubitt played ten seasons of first grade at the Roosters, winning a premiership at five eighth in 1913 and captaining the Club through the 1917 season. An agile speedster with great footwork, Cubitt could throw a dummy better than just about any other player of his era. He scored 53 tries in 93 first grade games and was the key backline player for the Club in its 1914, 1915 and 1916 City Cup championship victories.
Once World War I was over, Cubitt claimed the mantle as Australia’s best centre and on Australia’s initial tour of New Zealand in 1919, Cubitt made his debut for his country, scoring five tries in the four tests and an incredible 17 tries in the last three tour games. He had the honour of leading Australia on the 1921/22 Kangaroo tour, chosen as captain ahead of players such as Herb Gilbert and Charles ‘Chook’ Fraser, but unfortunately a serious knee injury restricted him to just four tour matches and he never got to captain Australia in a test match. The knee injury led to his retirement in 1922. Cubitt was named amongst the 100 greatest players of the first century of Australian rugby league and inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2008.
