Paul Tierney was a star for Country when they beat City in 1942 and the Army Lieutenant from the Illawarra joined the Roosters in 1943. A tall and tough three quarter, Teirney quickly established himself as a first grade regular but it wasn't until 1944 that he cemented the centre spot when Dick Dunn was moved to lock.
In 1945 as the Roosters marched towards another premiership, the moustached Tierney was a key member, with his defence lauded by many of the scribes of the era. When the Roosters defeated Western Suburbs to qualify for the 1945 Decider, Tierney scored three tries to ensure a Roosters victory.
Midway through the 1948 season Tierney took over the Roosters captaincy from Jack Arnold and he held down that prestigious post for about 12 months before standing down from the game after the Round 11 clash of the 1949 season.
