Allan McKean arrived at the Roosters from Wollongong in 1967 and after just one reserve grade game he made his debut in Round 2, and was the Roosters first choice fullback for most of the next seven seasons. He played finals in his first two seasons. One of the most reliable goal kickers of his era, McKean was chosen to play for Australia in the deciding Ashes test of 1970. He kicked seven goals on debut but Australia lost the test and the series. In 1972 McKean broke Dave Brown’s record for most points for the Roosters, a record that Brown had held for 31 years. McKean, himself, would then hold the new record, which he increased to 903 first grade points by the end of the 1973 season, for 33 years before it was eventually beaten by Craig Fitzgibbon in 2005.
In 1972 he was the competition’s leading point scorer with 220 points from 7 tries and 99 goals. He scored all of the Roosters points in the 1972 Preliminary Final as the Roosters qualified for their first grand final in 12 years. He was a fan favourite for his reliability at the back and his brilliant side step, which would regularly beat the first defender. He played the 1974 season in Reserve Grade before he returned to play for St George in 1975, his first club. On retirement McKean became a first grade referee.
