Ken Ashcroft was one of the Roosters great clubmen. He played 146 top grade games (all at hooker) and 30 lower grade games in an eleven-season career at the Roosters. When he closed the chapter on his Roosters career, after the 1967 season, only three players, all Rooster and NRL Hall of Famers (Ray Stehr, Sandy Pearce and Joe Pearce), had played more first grade games for the Club than Ashcroft. In 1960 he played all 23 matches in the season, including all five matches over just twenty days in August that enabled the team to qualify for a grand final appearance against St George.
In that 1960 season Ashcroft won the L.J. Hooker Award for most popular hooker in the competition with 28,437 votes, ahead of Bill Rayner, Fred Anderson and Ken Kearney. A consistent ball winner and a hard-working defender, Ashcroft formed a front row combination with props Jack Gibson and Terry Fearnley (both Roosters life members) that was one of the competition’s best through the late fifties and early sixties. Ken Ashcroft was an Easts junior from the Police Boys Rotary Club and mixed playing rugby league with his profession as a pastry cook.
