Max Nixon

Max Nixon was the eighth man to play 100 first grade games for the Roosters. Nixon was Ray Stehr’s prop partner for much of the 1930s after being graded by the Roosters from the Bronte Surf Club junior club in 1931. He played all 16 matches in that first season including the Grand Final loss to Souths. By 1933 Nixon was one of the best forwards in the competition and was regarded a strong chance to tour with the 1933/34 Kangaroos but suspension ruled him out of the 1933 intestate series and without that series he missed the opportunity to press for Australian selection. He played all but one match in the front row of the Roosters 1935 record breaking season and was set to win back-to-back premierships in 1936 before another suspension meant he missed out in playing in the 1936 Finals series.

A dislocated collarbone meant Nixon was restricted to just one first grade game in the 1937 shortened season as the Roosters won a third successive premiership, and that injury also meant he wasn’t considered for selection for the 1937/38 Kangaroo tour, which included many of his Roosters team mates. Long time Roosters Club Secretary Johnny Quinlan described Nixon as a great clubman.
