Rod O’Loan was a star winger in some of the Roosters’ greatest ever teams. He scored 76 tries in 83 first grade games and is one of only five men to have won four or more premierships for the Roosters. An extraordinary junior sportsman, the Waverley College old boy is the only Rooster to score twenty or more tries in a season twice, scoring 27 in 18 games in 1935 and 20 in 14 games in 1936. O’Loan scored tries in the 1935, 1936 and 1940 Deciders (there was no 1937 Decider) and holds the Roosters record for most tries in a match (scoring seven against University in Round 5, 1935).

O’Loan, who joined the Roosters in 1935 at the age of 20 after two seasons playing as an amateur with the University club, retired at 26 in 1941 to enlist in the Army (where he rose to the rank of Major). O’Loan’s career is somewhat unfairly diminished as a result of his decision to never make himself available for representative matches, due to study and work commitments (he forged a very successful post-Leage career in the military, business and in community service for which he was awarded both an MBE and a CBE). Easts teams that O’Loan played in lost just 13 of 83 matches.
