World-renowned rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson were special guests at Sydney Roosters Headquarters last Sunday night.
On January 14, 2015, Tommy and Kevin stepped on top of the Dawn Wall, a route on El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park thought to be unclimbable.
Their epic 19-day ascent captivated a global audience and was documented in the critically-acclaimed film The Dawn Wall which was released in 2018, and is currently streaming on Netflix.
The documentary shows the climb in intimate detail, some of the harrowing and moving events that led up to the climb and the unbreakable bond that saw the pair reach the top of the mountain together.
Currently in Australia on a speaking tour, together with their families, Tommy and Kevin were greeted by Head Coach Trent Robinson who led a tour of the Roosters facilities, before introducing Tommy, Kevin and their families to the Roosters staff and players, who were in attendance with their own families.
Tommy and Kevin were then given a tour of the Roosters home ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), before everybody assembled in the SCG’s Trust Suite.
Tommy and Kevin proceeded to share their inspiring personal stories and insights in an engaging discussion led by Robinson, with the floor also open to questions from the players, staff and family members in attendance.
“In their own right, Tommy and Kevin are world-class athletes, and when you think about what they did, it’s pretty powerful stuff, so it was awesome for us to be able to welcome not only them, but also their families to the Roosters,” said Robinson.
“Tommy and Kevin were really open and honest in sharing details of what they went through, taking us back to how they felt at various stages during the climb.
"We also heard about what life was like before they undertook the Dawn Wall, and what life has been like since,” he added.
The evening culminated in a group photo on the SCG, before everyone returned to Roosters HQ to share more stories over a barbecue dinner.
Tommy and Kevin are currently touring Australia as part of their The Tommy Caldwell & Kevin Jorgeson Live on Stage with The Dawn Wall tour, with two remaining dates in Sydney (Friday, July 26), Perth (Sunday, July 28) and Brisbane (Monday, July 29).
An exclusive ticket offer was emailed to Roosters Members earlier this week, while tickets are also available via Adventure Entertainment.
