Steggles Celebrate 100 Year Milestone

From humble beginnings to being Australia’s most preferred chicken brand, Steggles has been bringing Australian families together at the dinner table for over 100 years.

A household name, the iconic brand is synonymous with progress, quality and innovation.

It all started with George Steggles and his three sons—Jack, George and Stan in 1919, trading as Steggles Bros.

In a small shop in Newcastle, the Steggles family started by selling fresh produce.

Together, their dream was to offer Australians quality produce under a brand that reflected their steadfast family values.

Steggles began selling processed chickens by 1928.

Around Christmas and Easter, when there was a greater demand for chickens, the Steggles family, including Mrs Marion Steggles, would jump on their pushbikes to make deliveries around Newcastle.

But this came to a halt for a few years because of labour shortages due to World War II.

In 1968, Steggles established a post-graduate scholarship in poultry nutrition at the Sydney University.

At that point in time, it was the first scholarship of its kind in the field of poultry farming.

The same year saw Steggles become the first brand in Australia to branch into fast food chicken with the introduction of the Henny Penny fast food chain.

2010 marked the first major sponsorship Steggles ever engaged in with a purpose to raise awareness and further grow the brand.

The sponsorship of the NRL’s Sydney Roosters is very special.

Not only is it a great fit between the Sydney Roosters and Steggles chicken, but it also creates a vehicle for giving back to communities, particularly schools, and the formation of the Steggles Sydney Roosters Charity Nest.

As part of the sponsorship, for every winning point margin Steggles donates $1000 and the Sydney Roosters donate $250 to the Charity Nest.

The Sydney Roosters would like to congratulate Steggles on the fantastic achievement of 100 years in the business.
