Affiliate Wrap: Tough Round Across the Board

It was a tough round across the board for the Club's affiliate teams, with Glebe going down in the wet and the Silktails unable to complete their comeback, while were Ipswich outclassed.

Ron Massey Cup & Sydney Shield | Reds Go Down in Wet

The Glebe Dirty Reds suffered defeats in both grades on the weekend, with the Ron Massey side going down to St Marys, 34-18, while the Sydney Shield side fell to Cabramatta, 36-12.

Glebe Dirty Reds 18 def by St Mary's Saints 34

The Ron Massey boys started the better of the two sides, scoring first through Daniel Arahu after 18 minutes. Joe Taipari converted and the visitors led 6-nil, however, the game turned on its head soon after with Glebe fullback Jade Anderson sin-binned following a fracas.

St Marys capitalised on their one-man advantage, running in three tries while Anderson was off the field, however, the Dirty Reds were able to keep score line respectable at the break, trailing 16-6.

The home side extended their lead to 22-6 heading into the final quarter, before Glebe hit back with a converted try to Anderson to make it 22-12 - but St Marys' next try put the game beyond reach.

Both sides snagged a try in the final minutes, with Joe Taipari going over for Glebe, however it was not enough as St Marys took victory, 34-18.

The best for Glebe were middles Falefa Letoi and Tayson Fakaosi while back rower Vito Tevaga had a strong performance out wide.

The Ron Massey Cup side will face the high-flying Wentworthville Magpies on Sunday afternoon at Ringrose Park.

Glebe Dirty Reds 12 def by Cabramatta Two Blues 36

Meanwhile, poor handling in tough conditions effectively sealed Glebe’s fate in the Sydney Shield game at Cabramatta.

Highlights included Josh Tudehope’s try on debut and strong carries from middles Charles Vaka and Casey Morgan, who were again among Glebe’s best.

Unfortunately, it was the Two Blues who got the best of Glebe, running out a 36-12 victory.

The Sydney Shield side will play Penrith Brothers this weekend at Parker Street Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Jersey Flegg Cup | Silktails Fall Short of Comeback

Kaiviti Silktails 22 def by Parramatta Eels 42

The Kaiviti Silktails mounted a mighty comeback but were unable to secure victory in their Round 9 clash against the Parramatta Eels as they returned to Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday afternoon.

The squad enjoyed a special presentation from Fiji head coach Wise Kativerata throughout the week, gifting Akuila Qoro - who spoke emotionally - with his debut jersey.

The Silktails began proceedings with centre Mitchell Poulter sliding in for the first try after seven minutes, however, the visitors soon gained momentum to run in five tries as the home side faced a 30-6 uphill battle at the break.

Unconcerned with the task ahead, it was winger Emosi Daubitu crossing first in the second stanza, and while three quickfire tries saw the Eels extend to put the game beyond doubt, the Silktails returned serve with a double to five-eighth Suilo Loka to finish the match.

The Kaiviti Silktails will host the ladder-leading Canberra Raiders on Saturday at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

QLD Cup | Jets Downed by Pride

Ipswich Jets 12 def by Northern Pride 56

The Ipswich Jets opened and closed the scoring in their Round 8 clash against the Northern Pride, however, were unable to come away with the victory after succumbing to a 56-12 defeat.

It was a strong start from the Jets, who scored the first try of the match through back rower Seth Nikotemo, however, a slew of errors saw the visitors run in five tries with a 30-6 deficit at the break.

Unfortunately half-time failed to turn the Jets' fortunes around, with poor discipline handing their opponents possession and territory, with the only scoring from the side coming via winger Dominic Macumboy in the dying stages.

The Ipswich Jets will face the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval in Brisbane on Saturday afternoon in Round 9.
