The Sydney Roosters senior representative teams had anything but a good Friday when beaten easily in their Round 7 clashes with the Penrith Panthers at Mascot Oval.
NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have slumped to their fourth loss of the season, going down 32-6 to the Penrith Panthers at Mascot Oval on Good Friday.
Missing a number of players, the Roosters also lost fullback Owen Flaherty, filling in for the ill Ethan King, late in the first half to a groin injury, leading to hooker Reece Foley moving to fullback. Nevertheless, there were no excuses for the defeat, with the Panthers always in control of the game. The Roosters did have one big opportunity to get back into the game early in the second half when Panthers five eighth Jack Cole was sent to the sin bin, with the Roosters trailing by just 16-6. However, an errant pass in the first set against twelve men led to a runaway Panthers try and the Roosters day was done.
Roosters lone try scorer was Tom Rodwell, playing left wing. It was Rodwell’s sixth try from seven games this season. He also topped the metres gained, running for 180 metres from 18 runs. He’s been a highly consistent quality performer all season in that stats category. Lock and captain Max McCathie topped the tackle count with 40 tackles, through 72 playing minutes.
One positive for the Club were the successful returns from injury for NRL squad members Egan Butcher and Beniah Ioelu. Both hadn’t played in 2025 and were returning from stress fractures. Both came off the interchange bench, with Butcher getting through 30 minutes in the middle and Ioelu 23 minutes at hooker. They’ll both benefit greatly from the hit out.
The Roosters won’t play next weekend, as they have a bye, and will next play on Sunday, 4th May against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have been soundly beaten by the Penrith Panthers 40-12 at Mascot Oval. The Roosters, who went into the game, without key playmaker Josh Durkin, who was called up for NSW Cup duty, were no match for the impressive Panthers and were behind 30-0 at half time. Roosters tries were scored by winger Kade Maguire and halfback Bo Piesley, both when the result of the game had been settled. It was Maguire’s seventh try in seven games in 2025.
The Roosters next play the eighth placed Kaiviti Silktails over the Anzac Day weekend. The day, time and venue of the match are yet to be determined.
