NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have gone down 28-14 to the 9th placed Wests Magpies in their Round 17 clash at Lidcombe Oval. The Roosters struggled for much of the afternoon and after Wests led 10-6 at half time, the home team got out to a 28-10 lead late in the game before the Roosters scored a late try.
Wiliiam Malloy, on his NSW Cup debut, playing on the left wing replacing the ill Tom Rodwell, scored the Roosters only first half try, with fullback Ethan King crossing for the second early in the second half. The Roosters final try to right centre Ben Johnson was quite spectacular with Johnson put into open space by a lofted Chad Townsend pass before he kicked over the top and then put in a second kick to clear the fullback before regathering and scoring.
King was one of the Roosters best on the day, running for 153 metres with 7 tackle busts, 2 line break assists, 1 try assist and 1 try. Defensively, forwards Hayden Barton with 42 tackles and Aston Warwick with 39 led the Roosters tackle count whilst Makahesi Makatoa with 37 and Tyler Moriaty with 32 (they both played only 60 minutes each) were next highest.
The Roosters lost captain Jake Elliott with an ankle injury just before half time and then early in the second half prop Xavier Va’a, who had only been on the field for 16 minutes, suffered a heavy concussion and wasn’t cleared to return to the field. Both seem set for some time away from the game as a result of those injuries.
One bright spot for the Roosters was the return to the game of backrow forward Max McCathie, who had been sidelined with a back injury since Round 10. The former Roosters skipper got through the first 23 minutes of the second half without incident.
Despite the loss the Roosters remain in 6th spot on the ladder but are now two wins from 5th placed Penrith. They play 3rd placed Parramatta next Sunday at Wentworth Park but are likely to field a weakened team with 12 NRL squad members expected to be unavailable across the two top grades, prior to taking into account the injuries to those with second tier Rooster contracts.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have posted their third successive win with a 28-22 win over the 7th placed Wests Tigers at Lidcombe Oval. The Rooters scored twice in the first half, firstly through left edge forward Ethan Roberts and secondly through hooker Jaxson Allen, after a nice pass from five eighth Reeve Foley. Foley and Roberts, both fulltime NRL squad members, were together with halfback and captain Josh Durkin, amongst the Roosters best on the day.
Wests led 22-10 early in the second half before the Roosters ran in the final three tries. Impressive backrow forward Josiah Fesolai scored in the 49th minute before Roberts scored his second and then set up the final try for left centre Lachlan Dooner. This was Dooner’s first game in over ten weeks after suffering multiple hamstring injuries during the S.G. Ball Cup season.
The Roosters continue to improve as the young squad gets the opportunity to play more footy together. Despite the win the Roosters remain in 9th spot. Next Sunday it is the return fixture against the 5th placed Parramatta Eels at Wentworth Park.
