Roosters Flegg Cup team post best win of the season
NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have gone down 28-14 to 2nd placed St George Illawarra in their Round 19 clash at Wentworth Park. The Roosters went into the game with the late withdrawals of their starting props Taylor Losalu and De La Salle Va’a and a probable forward replacement, Ethan Roberts (knee), was also ruled out late in the week. However, despite these setbacks the Roosters posted first points in the game with a converted try to hooker Beniah Ioelu.
Unfortunately, the Roosters struggled for field position for most of the game, following that early try, against a team who posted their 10th win from their last 11 games with their victory over the Roosters. Missing Losalu, De la Salle Va’a, Xaxier Va’a (concussion) and not able to call on Roberts left the home team a little thin up front and the Dragons took full advantage. Roosters’ halves Toby Rodwell and Sandon Smith were rarely able to put the Dragons back three under any real pressure due to poor field position.
The Roosters never gave up though and posted two late tries to make the score respectable. Tom Rodwell, switched from left to right wing to accommodate new recruit Junior Tupou, scored in the 72nd, whilst fullback Ethan King, probably the Roosters best on the day, crossed in the 79th minute for his fourth try of 2025. For Rodwell his try was his 15th of the season (through 16 games) and he remains the leading try scorer in the NSW Cup this season. Five eighth Sandon Smith converted all three Roosters tries on the day.
The Roosters remain in 6th place with the loss but are two wins behind 5th placed Penrith, with 7 matches remaining. Next Saturday the Roosters face 4th placed Newtown at Henson Park but are likely to have a number of players returning to the team that missed the clash with the Dragons.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have posted their best win of the season with a 38-12 Round 19 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at Wentworth Park. The Roosters lost lock forward Zack Visconti in the hour leading up to the game, due to his late call up to the NSW Cup, and twice in the match lost key playmakers to the sin bin. Halfback and captain Josh Durkin was dismissed in the 30th minute, whilst halves partner Lachlan Dooner was given his marching orders in the 59th minute.
The Roosters starting front row and back up bench props were all teenagers but they not only stood up against the Dragons pack but dominated them to give Durkin and his team mates sufficient space to post seven tries on the day. With Durkin still in the bin to commence the second half, the Dragons crossed for their second try to take the lead 12-10 and despite Dooner going to the sin bin in the 59th minute, the Roosters scored five tries to nil in the final 25 minutes of the game. Durkin was the star but he had plenty behind him making major contributions.
Left winger Kade Maguire crossed for a double, taking his season tally to 20 (through 18 matches) to comfortably lead the competition’s leading try scorer table. Centre Will Malloy, returning to the side after a stint in the NSW Cup, crossed for his 11th try of the season (through 16 matches). Durkin finished with 18 points from 2 tries and 5 goals.
It was a terrific performance by the young Roosters, featuring nine of this season’s champion S.G. Ball Cup squad. There is plenty of reason to believe we will see this side improve further as the season continues to progress, despite a finals spot seemingly being out of reach.
Next Friday the team’s match is the curtain raiser to the Roosters NRL clash with Cronulla-Sutherland at Woolooware. The Roosters Flegg Cup team take on the 4th placed Sharks on Friday afternoon at 3.35pm.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The Central Coast Roosters NSW Women’s Premiership team have posted their first win of the season with a 22-12 victory over the St George Dragons at Kogarah.
The young Roosters team were forced into making seven changes from their Round One team with Logan Fletcher’s call up to the NRLW and six of the Round One team required to play in the Australian school’s carnival.
Despite these changes the Roosters crossed for five tries, with four of them going to replacement wingers Anabelle Ross (with three tries) and Fa’agase Tupuola-Palate (with another). NRLW forward Eliza Lopamaua scored the Roosters final try before the Dragons scored one on the bell to reduce the final margin to ten points.
The Roosters have moved into 6th place with their Round Two win but face a stern test next Saturday when they travel to Wollongong to take on the unbeaten Illawarra Steelers. The Roosters will again be without their Australian school’s carnival representatives.
