Roosters NSW Cup team claim victory on the bell.

NSW Cup

The 6th placed Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have kept their thin finals prospects alive with a last minute try to halfback Sandon Smith, giving the Roosters a 28-24 win over 10th placed North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.

The match couldn’t have started any worse for the Roosters after they dropped the kick-off and conceded the first try to the Bears from the ensuing line drop out. Eventually the Roosters got into the game but continually turned the ball over at inappropriate times and were rarely comfortable through the game, despite leading 12-6 after 23 minutes, 18-12 after 43 minutes and 24-22 after 68 minutes

Roosters scored twice in the first half through converted tries to right winger Trey Peni, after a nice break from his centre Ben Johnson, and a second to lock Reece Foley. The scores were locked at 12-12 at half time.

A converted try to Cook Islands test prop Makahesi Makatoa gave the Roosters a 18-12 lead early in the second half but once again errors by the Roosters allowed the Bears back into the game and when Aitasa James crashed over the line in the 57th minute, North Sydney led 22-18 after the conversion.

With a little over 10 minutes remaining Sandon Smith sliced through the Bears defence untouched and when he converted his own try the Roosters were back in front 24-22 and were poised to close out the game. However, an error off a line drop out by the Roosters led to a simple penalty in front of the posts and the scores were locked up again at 24-24. Twice Sandon Smith unsuccessfully attempted to kick a field goal and on the second failed attempt edge backrower Max McCathie scooped on the ball on the ground before finding Smith on his inside who dashed to the tryline as the final siren sounded.

Sandon Smith certainly played his hand at vital times to secure victory for the Roosters but Ethan King at fullback was outstanding throughout and continued a fine season for the man who has been in the Roosters NRL final 18 in each of their last 14 matches, but played in only two of them. King ran for 217 metres (68 post contact) and had 8 tackle breaks.

In the past five matches the Roosters have won four, three of them in the last five minutes, and their one loss was in the 79th minute against the Bulldogs. That loss continues to haunt the Roosters who sit one point outside the Top 5 with just two rounds remaining.

To make the finals the Roosters must beat Newcastle (12th) next Sunday at Wentworth Park and the Magpies (8th) in the final round and hope Newtown (5th) lose their final round match to Manly (11th) or Penrith (4th) lose both their final games against the Dragons (3rd) and the Raiders (7th).

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 8th placed Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have been comprehensively defeated by competition leaders the Melbourne Storm 46-12 in Melbourne in their Round 24 clash.

The Roosters led 6-0 early after 18-year-old prop Itula Seve showed great strength to score near the posts but it was all the Storm after that with the high-flying ladder leaders running in seven straight tries to lead 40-6 before the Roosters scored their second try, midway through the second half. The Roosters try scorer on this occasion was the elder Seve brother, Fanafou, who produced a typical Fanafou barnstorming run to post his sixth try of the season (in 11 games) and the Roosters second.

The Storm scored their 8th try soon after though to complete the scoring at 46-12. The Roosters were no match for the very impressive Melbourne outfit.

Roosters left winger Kade Magurie, who is the competition’s leading try scorer (23 tries in 22 games), left the field after 30 minutes with a broken arm, which is likely to rule him out for the season, whilst right winger and captain Will Malloy was forced off a few minutes later with concussion and was unable to rtuen to the field. The loss of both wingers, with the score at 16-6, with no backs on the interchange bench, left the Roosters extremely vulnerable to a Storm attacking onslaught, which inevitably followed.

The Roosters, who drop to 9th following the Storm loss, return home next Sunday to play the 8th placed Newcastle Knights. The match kicks off at 12.30pm.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 8th placed Central Coast Roosters NSW Women’s Premiership team have been easily defeated 20-0 by competition leaders Newcastle at Woy Woy in their Monday night clash.

The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Logan Fletcher (winger), Jayde Herdegen (five eighth), Imogen Hei (hooker) and Tavarna Papalii (lock), as well as NRLW development players Talea Tonga (fullback), Sienna Thomas (halfback) and Mahlie Cashin (interchange). However, the young Roosters team were no match for the Knights who scored four tries to nil and ran out comfortable winners.

The Roosters will next play 4th placed Parramatta at Granville on Sunday where the Roosters will be chasing their third win of the season.

Ron Massey Cup

The 4th placed Glebe Ron Massey Cup team have finished the regular season in 5th spot after swapping places with the Wentworthville Magpies, after the Dirty Reds were easily defeated 44-24 by 2nd placed Ryde-Eastwood at Wentworth Park.

Glebe, who featured three (winger Emery Jolliffe, centre Vito Tevaga and lock Josh Finau) Roosters NSW Cup squad members in their team, conceded 8 tries, including 5 in the first half, after they were behind 28-12 at halftime.

The defending premiers now face the prospect of needing to win four successive finals to defend their title, commencing next Saturday when they play the Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park in an elimination semi final.

Sydney Shield

The 6th placed Glebe Sydney Shield team have slumped to their fifth successive loss and dropped to 8th on the competition ladder after a final round 40-14 defeat at the hands of Ryde-Eastwood at Wentworth Park.

Glebe, who featured three (winger Druzel Talua, hooker Jacob Tinslet and second rower James Khoo) Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members in their team, conceded 7 tries, including 4 in the second half, after they were behind 16-4 at halftime.

With just five teams qualifying for the finals that completes the 2025 season for Glebe in the Sydney Shield. They finished the season with 7 wins and 9 losses.
