NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have lost any possibility of qualifying for the 2025 finals with their 28-24 defeat at the hands of 12th placed Newcastle Knights at Wentworth Park.
After winning just five games and finishing 13th (last) in their first year back in the competition in 2023, the Roosters improved last year to finish 10th with nine wins and a draw and have improved further this year, in which they’ll finish either 6th or 7th win twelve or thirteen wins. In each season the Roosters continue to use the competition to develop future first graders and regularly field one of the youngest teams in the competition.
After the injury to Sam Walker in the NRL on Saturday night, halfback Sandon Smith was withdrawn from the NSW Cup team for the Knights game and unfortunately his absence was a factor in the final result. The Roosters scored five tries but could only covert two of them as they went down by just four points.
After trailing 18-12 at half time after first half tries to left winger Tom Rodwell (his 19th of the season in 21 matches) and two to fullback Ethan King, the Roosters grabbed the lead within the final 25 minutes of the match after second half tries to Ethan King (his third of the game) and prop De La Salle Va’a but couldn’t withstand the Knights comeback, conceding tries in the 66th and 71st minute to go down 28-24.
The Roosters season concludes next Sunday when the Roosters, now 7th, play the 9th placed Western Suburbs Magpies at Wentworth Park.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The 10th placed Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have comfortably beaten the 8th placed Newcastle Knights 30-6 at Newcastle in their Round 25 clash. Despite missing a host of players, the Roosters notched their 11th win of the season in a most emphatic fashion.
All six Roosters tries were scored down the Knights right side, with left winger Enzo Griffier, a French international, scoring three, left edge forward Ethan Roberts a double and 17-year-old left centre Jeziah Papa scoring the Roosters other try. Roosters’ half Brooklyn Rosemeyer was the dominate playmaker and is very much a left sided player and given the success they were having down that side it made plenty of sense to keep going that way.
The win has lifted the Roosters to 8th spot on the ladder but with just one round to go prior to the finals the Roosters season will conclude next weekend when they play the 7th placed Wests Tigers at Wentworth Park on Sunday.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The 8th placed Central Coast Roosters NSW Women’s Premiership team have scored three tries to two but gone down 16-14 to 4th placed Parramatta at Merrylands.
The Roosters team included NRLW squad members Logan Fletcher (winger). Jayde Herdegen (five eighth), Shawden Burton (hooker) and Imogen Hei (lock) as well as NRLW development players Talea Tonga (fullback), Sienna Thomas (halfback) and Mahlie Cashin (interchange hooker) and were the better team for much of the match.
After Logan Fletcher crossed for the Roosters third try, off a clever Mahlie Cashin chip kick, the Roosters led 14-12. However, into the final ten minutes the Roosters conceded a series of penalties that eventually determined the outcome of the game. A 63rd minute penalty goal to the Eels for inside the 10 metres locked the scores up at 14-14 before a scuffle broke out in the final minute of the match that led to Roosters forward Tyra Dymock being sent to the sin bin and the Eels’ Alysha Bell slotting her third penalty goal of the match to give the Eels a 16-14 victory.
It was a most frustrating loss for the Roosters who had scored two earlier individual tries to NRLW squad members Jayde Herdegen (6th minute) and Shawden Burton (42nd minute) prior to the Fletcher try.
The loss, the Roosters’ sixth of the season, drops the Roosters down to 9th spot, prior to the Club’s next fixture against the 11th placed Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworthville next Saturday. They can’t qualify for the finals this season.
The team, however, is expecting the return of a number of players for their clash with Wentworthville who missed the match against the Eels.
Ron Massey Cup
The 5th placed Glebe Ron Massey Cup team’s premiership defence has come to an end after going down 26-8 to 4th placed Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworthville in their elimination final.
The Dirty Reds team included Roosters NSW Cup squad members Emery Jolliffe (winger), Lafi Tuinauvai (prop), Vito Tevaga (second rower) and Josh Finau (lock) and led 4-0 after 10 minutes and 10-8 early in the second half, after a double to winger Sione Manakofua, but conceded three second half tries in a disappointing conclusion to the season.
Despite the loss, the relationship between Glebe and the Sydney Roosters, that has just completed its third season, is in great shape and will continue for a number of years following a recent renewal of the agreement between the two organisations.
Sydney Shield
The Sydney Shield season for the Glebe Dirty Reds is over after the Club finished 8th during the regular season and missed the finals.
