NSW Cup
The 7th placed Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have completed their 2025 commitments with a 50-18 victory over 9th placed Western Suburbs at Wentworth Park. The team has missed the finals after finishing on equal competition points with 5th placed Canberra and 6th placed Penrith and one point behind 4th placed Newtown.
2025 was the Club’s third season back in the NSW Cup. After posting just 5 wins in 2023 and finishing last, the team improved in 2024, finishing 10th with 9.5 wins, and this season improved again winning 13 games and missing the finals on differentials.
51 players were used through the season with 21 of those still eligible to play Jersey Flegg Cup. It continues to prepare players for NRL duty with 20 players in 2025 playing both NSW Cup and NRL for the Roosters.
The match against the Magpies was the team’s 5th win from their final seven games with the two losses being by 2 and 4 points. The Roosters scored 9 tries against the Magpies after leading 18-6 at half time. Winger Tom Rodwell again crossed for a try, taking his season tally to 20 from 22 games. Left edge forward and local junior Hayden Barton scored three tries and Cook Islands international prop Makahesi Makatoa crossed for a double.
The match will be the final one in Roosters colours for a few players and the final game of rugby league for veteran halfback Chad Townsend, who was given a guard of honour as he entered the field for his final game.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have finished the season in 9th spot after going down 36-30 to 7th placed Wests Tigers in their final round match at Wentworth Park.
The Roosters led early after an intercept try to hooker Jaxson Allen but found themselves well behind on the scoreboard soon after, conceding four tries in 12 minutes to be trailing the Tigers 20-6 after 26 minutes. Those 12 minutes were, unsurprisingly, critical to the final outcome. Two tries to 19-year-old prop Kanaan Magele, the second as the half time siren sounded, allowed the Roosters to reduce the deficit significantly, and the Roosters went to half time behind by just 20-18.
However, with 14 minutes to go the Roosters had again fallen behind substantially with the Tigers leading 36-22 and nine minutes later the Tigers still led by 14. Two late tries to firstly, Kanaan Magele (his third of the game), and secondly to 17-year-old left centre Jeziah Papa, off a miracle Ethan Roberts pass, in his last game for the Club, got the Roosters to within six of the Tigers but 36-30 was to be the final score.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The Central Coast Roosters NSW Women’s Premiership team have moved up to 8th place on the competition ladder with a 30-16 victory over 11th placed Wentworthville at Wentworthville last Saturday. It was the team’s third win of the season.
The Roosters team included NRLW players Logan Fletcher (fullback), Jayde Herdegen (five eighth), Imogen Hei (hooker), Tavarna Papalii (lock) and Taneisha Gray (bench). Papalii was returning to the game after missing the last match with concussion, whilst Gray had been out for six weeks with a knee injury.
The Roosters scored four first half tries to lead 20-10 at the break and added two more in the second half to run out comfortable winners.
There are two more matches left in the season for the Roosters. In the coming weeks they play 3rd placed Mounties and 2nd placed Cronulla-Sutherland. The Mounties match is next Sunday at Woy Woy.
