Club Weekend Results | 14th February, 2026

On a mixed day for those Roosters junior representative teams in action last Saturday, the Club posted four wins from the four games played in Wollongong against the Illawarra Steelers, whilst being convincingly defeated in the two games against Penrith at St Marys.

S.G. Ball Cup (Men’s Under 19s)

The Sydney Roosters have again left it late to secure victory, but in doing so have made it two from two to commence their premiership defence. The Roosters went into the game missing six first choice players and certainly, in attack at least, were not at their best but did enough to defeat the Illawarra Steelers 9-8 in their Round Two clash in Wollongong.

The Roosters dominated much of the first half but came up with just one try. Prop Charleston Te Rore, who again impressed greatly in his first stint, beat multiple defenders to score in the 9th minute near the posts after captain Darcy Smith went very close to scoring earlier in the set. The try was converted by Carter Mareko, who added a penalty goal to the score after 25 minutes. That 8-0 scoreline was not to change until 18 minutes prior to fulltime, when Illawarra left centre Cooper Morrison scored (unconverted) in the left corner after the Steelers had dominated possession and field position for the bulk of the second half.

A monumental blunder on the Roosters tryline in their left corner gifted the Steelers their second try (also unconverted) to Illawarra five eight Beau Baldock and with four minutes to go the scores were locked at 8-8. Fortunately, the Roosters got an opportunity in the dying minutes of the game to kick a field goal, and although the attempt was touched by a Steelers defender, the Mareko kick sailed through the posts to give the Roosters a 9-8 win.

Apart from some fine charges from Te Rore, the efforts of young Roosters right centre Jeziah Papa should also be mentioned as he saved a certain try with a long-range chase and came up with a couple of other key defensive plays in the game.

The Roosters next play the St George Dragons at Henson Park on Sunday. The Dragons have lost their first two games of the season to the Raiders and Storm, conceding 76 points across the two matches.

The Central Coast Roosters have crashed to a second successive defeat in their Round Two clash with the Penrith Panthers at St Marys.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the Central Coast Roosters in their first season back in the competition since 2020, and on Saturday they were no match for the Penrith Panthers, going down 56-6 after being behind 26-0 at halftime. The Panthers ran in 10 tries with hat tricks to Panthers’ fullback Darcy Feltham and right winger Tyler Peken.

The Roosters sole try was scored by fullback Tayte Bayley who took an intercept and ran 35 metres to score a converted try (converted by Kyran Blair) in the final five minutes of the match.

The Roosters, who now sit 17th on the ladder, are up against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Guildford in their next match. The Bulldogs, after a Round One bye, were beaten 28-20 by the Canberra Raiders in Round Two on Saturday.

Harold Matthews Cup (Men’s Under 17s)

After a disappointing loss to the Penrith Panthers in Round One, the Sydney Roosters have returned to the winning list in style, with a 22-12 win over the Illawarra Steelers in their Round Two clash in Wollongong on Saturday.

After conceding the first two tries to be behind 8-0 after 15 minutes, the Roosters fought back well to get back in the game, led by hooker Caleb Zahra. Zahra scored tries in the 21st and 28th minutes and made the line break that led to the Roosters other first half try (in the 24th minute) to left edge Cooper Tesoriero. From 8-0 behind, the Roosters led 18-8 at half time.

Right centre Andy Toia’s sin binning early in the second half threatened to derail the Roosters but a brilliant 40/20 from half Charlie Webb, soon after Toia was removed from the field, led to the Roosters fourth try to Toia’s brother Mana, who beat four defenders to the line with some clever left foot stepping. Earlier in the half left centre Mana Toia took an intercept to save a try on the Roosters tryline before racing 50 metres downfield.

The Roosters did concede a try whilst Andy Toia was off the field but the 4-4 scoreline whilst he was off was sufficient for the Roosters to hold out the Steelers and post a 22-12 win.

The Roosters next play the St George Dragons at Henson Park on Sunday. The Dragons beat the Melbourne Storm on Saturday, after going down to the Canberra Raiders in Round One.

After a very impressive Round One victory, the Central Coast Roosters failed to live up to that form on Saturday and were convincingly beaten 38-0 by the Penrith Panthers in their Round Two clash at St Marys. The Panthers ran in seven tries in total, after leading 20-0 at halftime.

The Roosters are up against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Guildford in their next match. The Bulldogs, after a Round One bye, beat the Canberra Raiders 28-6 in Round Two on Saturday.

Tarsha Gale Cup (Women’s Under 19s)

The Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy team have secured back-to-back wins to kick off the 2026 season. After dispensing with the Penrith Panthers 34-4 in Round One, the Roosters have run in six tries to defeat Illawarra 32-0 on Saturday in Wollongong, after the Roosters led 10-0 at half time.

Roosters prop Felila Fakalelu, who scored two tries in Round One, scored another double in Round Two, as the Roosters showed once again that they’ll be one of the premiership heavyweights in 2026.

Five eighth Talea Tonga, hooker Mahlie Cashin and lock forward Anastasia Leatupue were outstanding for the Roosters, whilst fullback and captain Mia Vaotuua again showed her qualities. Vaotuua threw the pass for the Roosters first try, to right winger Jayda Durham, and Cashin split the Steelers defence to send interchange prop Te Raukura Leafe on a long run for the Roosters second.

Tonga set up the Roosters third try (and first of the second half), for Vaotuua, when she broke open the Steelers defence to send her captain racing to the try line. The Roosters fourth was created by Vaotuua who cleverly set up a three on two down the Steelers left edge to send left winger Kiri-Kowhai Ned to the corner. Tonga set up the fifth try for Fakalelu with a deft dummy half kick into the in-goal area, whilst it was Fakalelu’s power that created the final try, and her second, from a Cashin dummy half pass.

The Roosters next play the St George Dragons at Woy Woy on Saturday. The Dragons have lost their first two games of the season to the Raiders and the Storm.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women’s Under 17s)

The Central Coast Roosters have made it two from two to open the season after defeating the Illawarra Steelers 28-6 at Wollongong on Saturday in their Round Two clash.

The Roosters scored six tries to one, after leading 18-6 at half time, with right winger Sienna Kennedy-Wilkie crossing for three of the Roosters six tries, taking her season tally to four.

The Roosters had a number of fine players on the day. Fullback and captain Stella Hall, five eighth Layla Tonga and lock forward Leilani Mareko were the most impressive in a solid team performance.

The Roosters next play the St George Dragons at Henson Park on Sunday. The Dragons have lost their first two games of the season to the Raiders and Storm, conceding 82 points across the two matches.
