The Sydney Roosters are most saddened to hear of the death of Bill Markou, Roosters Player No. 649 on Thursday, 19th February, in Sydney.
A Paddington Colts junior, Markou played four seasons of first grade after making his debut, off the bench, in the Roosters Round One match against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval in 1975. He went on to play three first grade games in that premiership winning season, as well as two Amco Cup games, one of which was the semifinal victory over Auckland. In total Markou played seven first grade games and five Amco Cup games between 1975 and 1978, playing first grade in each season.
In 1976 Markou played 20 matches for the Roosters Under 23s team, which went on to win the premiership that season. He was lock forward in that grand final side which defeated Canterbury-Bankstown 25-5 in the decider, under the coaching of Billy Anderson. The Under 23s team lost just two matches all season and will be celebrated later this year, 50 years on from that brilliant season. Markou was one of the standout players of that team, many of whom went on to play, or had already played, first grade for the Roosters. He was a highly talented and skilful player.
The Club passes on its deepest condolences to Bill’s family and friends.
