The Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup team have begun their season in fine style with a thumping Round 1 victory over the defending premiers.

NSW Cup

In a stunning start to the N.S.W. Cup competition, the Sydney Roosters have scored ten tries to three in a 48-14 thumping of the defending premiers the New Zealand Warriors in their Round One clash in Auckland on Friday.

The Roosters went into the match missing five key spine members; Cody Ramsey (NRL reserves bench), Hugo Savala (ankle), Toby Rodwell (NRL reserves bench), Benaiah Ioelu (NRL duty) and Jake Elliott (hamstring) but were never troubled, racing to a 28-0 half time lead with six first half tries. It was the Roosters first victory over the Warriors since the Roosters returned to the competition in 2023.

19 year old Lachlan Dooner partnered Reece Foley in the halves on Friday, whilst the hooking duties were shared by two other 19 year olds, Josiah Fesolai (on N.S.W. Cup debut) and Jaxson Allen.

Reece Foley, playing halfback, was exceptional in the first half, having a hand in five of the Roosters’ six first half tries. Foley, however, was able to play off the front foot due to a powerhouse performance by a number of Roosters forwards. Lock Salesi Foketi, who had three line breaks, topped the metres gained (191) and tackles made (31) counts, whilst giant prop De La Salle Va’a ran for 149 metres across the 34 minutes he was on the field for. Middle forward Jaxson Rahme, a new recruit from the Wests Magpies (151 meters in 57 minutes) and Hayden Barton (152 metres and three line breaks) playing left edge and later left centre, also had impressive numbers amongst the forwards, as did right winger Tom Rodwell (147 metres) and fullback Owen Flaherty (151 metres) in the backline.

Jaxson Allen, who played the final 52 minutes at hooker, scored two tries and had a hand in two others in a dynamic display by the young man from Junee. Another player to score a double was Club debutant Tommy Talau, playing left centre, who crossed for tries in both halves. Unfortunately, the Sea Eagles recruit suffered, what could be, a serious knee injury, early in the second half, and could not return to the field. Scans back in Australia will determine the extent of the injury.

The Roosters next play the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Sunday at Redfern Oval, as the Roosters attempt to start the new season with two successive wins. The Rabbitohs were beaten 52-10 by the Newcastle Knights in their Round One clash at Cessnock over the weekend.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The Sydney Roosters have gone down 44-14 to the New Zealand Warriors in their Round One clash against the New Zealand Warriors at Pukekohe.

The Roosters conceded eight tries to three after the Warriors led 22-10 at half time. The Roosters went into the match missing a number of key players and with a completion rate of just 63% and 45% possession, the Roosters were no match for the home team. The Roosters also missed 54 tackles and made 15 errors with the ball.

It was a disappointing start to the season but some of the individual performances were encouraging, led by 19 year old Kiwi prop Kanaan Magele, who backed up in this game after playing a short stint in the N.S.W. Cup match the day prior.

Roosters tries were scored by Sharks recruit John-Paul Donevski, playing right side back row, Roosters S.G. Ball Cup 2025 premiership interchange middle Kynan Toevai and Parramatta recruit Dom Farrugia, playing on the right wing.

The Roosters will be looking to hit right back next Sunday when they take on arch rivals, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, at Redfern Oval. The Rabbitohs beat Newcastle 26-14 in their Round One clash.
