One win and one loss from the two senior representative fixtures against South Sydney at Redfern as the season moved on to Round Two games.

NSW Cup

The 2nd placed Sydney Roosters have made it back-to-back wins to start the 2026 season, with an impressive 30-18 win over the 14th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval on Sunday, after the Roosters led 10-8 at half time.

The team went into the match missing injured players Tommy Talau (knee), Jake Elliott (hamstring), Hugo Savala (ankle), Rhys Dakin (ankle) and Michael Coleman (knee), whilst Benaiah Ioelu, Salesi Foketi and Junior Pauga were also unavailable, having played in the NRL on Friday night.

The squad depth was further tested when left winger Junior Tupou was injured (ankle) in the 8th minute of the game and could not return to the field. The subsequent reshuffle saw left Lachlan Dooner move from left centre to left wing and backrow interchange player Aston Warwick coming on to play the remainder of the game at left centre.

The Rabbitohs enjoyed the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half but it was the Roosters who looked the more likely team early and it was no surprise that the Roosters posted first points when lock Jaxson Rahme stormed through four Souths defenders to score near the posts in just his second game for the Club. With the Toby Rodwell conversion the Roosters led 6-0 after 22 minutes. However, a few errors were creeping into the Roosters play and the Rabbitohs hit back soon after to tie the scores at 6-6 after 28 minutes.

A lovely backline shift, in the 33rd minute, saw 2025 Player of the Year Tom Rodwell cross in the right corner after halves Toby Rodwell and Reece Foley combined with fullback Cody Ramsey and right centre Ben Johnson to give Tom Rodwell an uninterrupted run to the tryline. As a result of that try the Roosters were able to take a 10-8 lead into half time after Souths kicked a long-range penalty goal after the half time siren.

Taking advantage of the breeze in the second half, the Roosters posted the first four tries in the second half to secure victory. The first of those tries saw the halves combine again with Toby Rodwell holding up the Souths defence before sending Reece Foley into a yawning gap for him to score untouched. The Rodwell conversion took the lead out to 16-8.

The second try of the half saw Cody Ramsey, in his Club debut, send a nice cut out pass to Lachlan Dooner, on the left wing, and his inside ball to Aston Warwick enabled Warwick to send Reece Foley in for his second try of the day. The try of the game came in the 56th minute, with the Roosters ahead 20-8, when Ramsey fielded a kick 25 metres out from the Roosters line. Ramsey beat multiple defenders in a 35 metre dash before linking up with Tom Rodwell who then gave Ben Johnson a clear 30 metre run to the line. That try was also unconverted but the Roosters were now well on top, leading 24-8. After a long Hayden Barton break down the left side, Toby Rodwell put in a very clever chip kick which bounced perfectly for Cody Ramsey to score the Roosters sixth and final try of the day under the posts. With the conversion the Roosters led 30-8. Two Souths tries in the 72nd and 79th minute pulled the core back to 30-18 but it was a comprehensive Roosters victory.

Given the players that have been missing early in the season, Coach Brett Morris would surely be very satisfied with the Roosters start to the season. It is the first time the Roosters have won their opening two matches of a season since returning to the competition in 2023.

The Sydney Roosters remain in 2nd place on the competition table following Sunday’s win and next play the 10th placed Penrith Panthers at Wentworth Park on Sunday at 2.45 pm.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 14th placed Sydney Roosters have lost their second successive game to commence the 2026 season with a 40-22 loss to the 3rd placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval on Sunday.

With Flegg Cup players Jaxson Allen, Lachlan Dooner, Josiah Fesolai and Kanaan Magele on NSW Cup duty and Zac Sarfati, Enzo Griffier, Aholoka Toia, Jackson Pennell. Zac Gillett, Peter Benjamin Uini headlining a burgeoning injury list, the Roosters fielded a very under strength side and did particular well to match it with Souths for much of the game. Further, Charlie Elmes, playing in the second row, was taken from the field 11 minutes into the Souths game, but failed his Head Injury Assessment and did not return to the field. The 18th player was activated.

Three Souths tries in a 12 minute period early in the second half killed off the Roosters, after the Rabbitohs led 16-10 at half time. Roosters try scorers were wingers Kade Maguire and Dom Farrugia, fullback Jackson Stewart and right centre John-Paul Donevski. The four try scorers were amongst the Roosters best players.

As squad members return from injury and NSW Cup duty over the next month there is little doubt that the team will be able to compete with the best of the Jersey Flegg Cup teams. A number of S.G. Ball Cup stars are also expected to bolster the squad once that competition is completed.

The Sydney Roosters, remain in 14th place on the competition table following Sunday’s loss and next play the 4th placed Penrith Panthers at Wentworth Park on Sunday at 12.30 pm.
