Returning to Wentworth Park for the first time in 2026 the Roosters lost both senior games against the Penrith Panthers but in better news the Glebe Dirty Reds opened their season with two wins against Penrith Brothers at Wentworth Park.
NSW Cup
The 2nd placed Sydney Roosters have suffered their first loss of the 2026 season after the 9th placed Penrith Panthers beat the Roosters 38-12 at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Panthers led 22-12 at half time.
The Roosters welcomed back hooker Benaiah Ioelu from NRL duty and Hugo Savala (ankle) and Jake Elliott (hamstring) from pre-season injuries, with Savala and Elliott starting from the bench. Savala played 31 minutes at lock forward, whilst Elliott played the final 18 minutes at hooker.
Early errors enabled the Panthers to get on the board early and within 13 minutes the Panthers had opened up a 12-0 lead. However, a penalty on the Roosters line enabled Halfback Toby Rodwell to find touch and on the 3rd tackle of the set after the tap, 65 metres from the Panthers line, lock Jaxson Rahme threw a lovely short ball to prop Taylor Losalu who burst into the backfield by busting through two Penrith defenders. Showing good pace Losalu was then able to position Rodwell to take his pass and race 25 metres to the try line. Rodwell’s conversion brought the scores back to 12-6.
Five minutes later Roosters fullback Cody Ramsey fielded a clearing kick 25 metres from the Roosters try line. Ramsey got up to top speed very quickly and sliced through the Panthers defensive line before stepping the fullback and offloading to his left edge backrower Hayden Barton in support. Barton had an uninterrupted 30 metre run to the try line and with the Rodwell conversion the scores were locked at 12-12.
Unfortunately, that was the end of any Roosters scoring. The Panthers went on to score tries in the 32nd and 38th minute to lead 22-12 at half time and the Roosters resilience from the first two rounds was quickly disappearing. The Roosters struggled to complete sets and defensively were very vulnerable. Penrith went on to score three more second half tries to run out 38-12 winners.
There wasn’t a lot of positives for the Roosters, with the exception of the form of Cody Ramsey at fullback, who has been exceptional in his two Roosters outings, and a zero-injury toll coming out of the game.
With that win the Roosters drop to 3rd place on the ladder and next play the 8th placed Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Brookvale on Thursday.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters have crashed to their third successive loss to start the 2026 competition with a heartbreaking 28-26 loss to the 5th placed Penrith Panthers at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Panthers led 18-10 at half time.
After two big losses to start the season, the Roosters did everything but collect the two points in their Round 3 clash, with the Panthers snatching victory in the 79th minute of the game after the Roosters had led 26-24. Hooker Jaxson Allen, lock Josiah Fesolai and Prop Kanaan Magele came back into the side after playing the first two rounds in NSW Cup, and fullback Zac Sarfati (concussion) and prop Peter Benjamin Uini returned from injury and were amongst the team’s better players, particularly Allen and Magele.
Magele was sent to the sin bin in the 17th minute and when he returned 10 minutes later the Panthers had stretched their 6-4 lead (after right winger Dom Farrugia had scored for the Roosters in the 5th minute) to 18-4 and it was an uphill climb for the Roosters from there. However, the Roosters did score tries in the 32nd, 42nd, 58th and 72nd minutes (to Magele, bench forwards Jayden Missio and Kynan Toevai and left centre Jackson Stewart) to take a 26-24 lead late in the game.
The Roosters were unable to close the game out and a change of possession near half way in the final minutes gave the Panthers the opportunity to post their fifth try to win the game, on what was looking like their final play of the game. Whilst it was a disappointing loss, the side showed that a win is not too far away.
With that loss the Roosters remain in 14th place on the ladder and next play the 9th placed Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Narrabeen on Sunday.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The competition for the Central Coast Roosters doesn’t commence until Saturday, 13th June.
Ron Massey Cup
The Glebe Dirty Reds have opened their 2026 season with a 26-6 win over the Penrith Brothers at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after Glebe led 26-0 at half time.
Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Will Malloy, Michael Coleman and Rhys Dakin played for Glebe, who fielded a team with a number of very well known former NRL players. In the halves were two 36 year olds (and former internationals) Brad Takarangi and Dean Whare and former PNG international James Segeyaro, 35, at hooker. Segeyaro was a class above and was most dominant in the first half as the Dirty Reds ran up a 26-0 half time lead.
Will Malloy, playing left centre, scored the first two tries of the match. Unfortunately, in the 63rd minute of the match James Segeyaro suffered what could be a serious hip injury and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.
With that Round One win, Glebe sits 2nd on the competition ladder and next play 4th placed St Marys at St Marys on Sunday.
Sydney Shield
The Glebe Dirty Reds have opened their 2026 season with a 28-22 win over Penrith Brothers at Wentworth Park on Saturday, after Glebe led 18-10 at half time.
Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg squad member Jonti Morshead-Feildel played on the right wing for Glebe and the Frenchman scored for the Dirty Reds in the first half.
The Dirty Reds had a winning 28-10 lead with 27 minutes remaining, but two converted tries in the last 20 minutes to Penrith reduced the final margin to just six.
With that win, Glebe sits 3rd on the competition ladder after the opening round and next play 4th placed St Marys at St Marys on Sunday.
