After a solid win against the Sea Eagles in the NRL on Thursday, the remaining Roosters men’s senior teams were also able to put their best feet forward with easy wins over the Manly-Warringah club over the weekend just gone.
NSW Cup
The 3rd placed Sydney Roosters have returned to the winners list with a 44-18 win over 9th placed Manly-Warringah at Wentworth Park on Saturday, after the Roosters led 14-12 at half time.
The Roosters welcomed back Tommy Talau (knee), and Junior Pauga and Blake Steep from NRL duty into the side, after losing skipper Max McCathie with a foot injury in the lead up to the game. 20-year-old halfback Toby Rodwell took over as captain. Talau and Pauga played centre and wing on the left side respectively, whilst Steep played 68 minutes, the first 25 on the right edge and the remainder in the middle.
The Roosters ran into the wind in the first half and conceded the first try to Manly’s exciting young half Joey Walsh. However, the Roosters fought back strongly with the next three tries, before conceding a second try late in the first half.
The second half was all the Roosters, with the team running in the first five tries of the half and totally dominating the Sea Eagles. Left winger Junior Pauga was the star of the Roosters attack. He scored two tries, ran for 248 metres (including 92 post contact),2 line-breaks and a highly impressive 20 tackle busts. Ben Johnson, Tom Rodwell and Reece Foley all scored tries, and they now join Hayden Barton at the top of the 2026 Roosters try scorers list with three each. Blake Steep, with 36 tackles (just one miss), had a strong game as well, as did hooker Benaiah Ioelu and prop Taylor Losalu. All three also scored tries.
With that win, their 3rd victory from 4 matches this season, the Roosters have moved into 2nd place on the ladder ahead of their first bye of the season in Round 5.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The 14th placed Sydney Roosters have notched up their first victory of the season with a 44-20 win over 9th placed Manly-Warringah at Narrabeen on Sunday, after the Sea Eagles led 20-8 at half time.
NRL squad member Rex Bassingthwaite (wrist) returned to the field at fullback for the Roosters and Tyrone Hurt-Pickering played at five eighth after missing Rounds 2 and 3. Central Coast Roosters S.G. Ball Cup captain Charles Barnes was another addition, added to the interchange bench in one of a number of changes to the side that had lost their first three games.
Manly dominated the scoreboard for the first 35 minutes, leading 20-4, and the Roosters were staring at a fourth successive loss to commence the season. However, the Roosters were able to cross for their second try just before half time to stay in the game. It was the Roosters first of 8 tries in 36 minutes. 19-year-old Rex Bassingthwaite playing in just his 4th game since 2024, showed why he’s so highly regarded within the Club and the game. His electrifying acceleration was seen in four of the Roosters tries, two to Bassingthwaite himself, and others to centres Jackson Stewart (left) and Zac Sarfati (right).
Another 19-year-old, hooker Jaxson Allen was also a star for the Roosters, scoring a try of his own and having a hand in a number of others, whilst prop Peter Benjamin Uini had his best game at Jersey Flegg Cup level. Prolific try scorer Kade Maguire, on the left wing, crossed for three tries and was instrumental in the try scored by Allen. Maguire has now scored 30 tries in 28 career Jersey Flegg Cup games.
The Roosters put the writing on the wall for such a performance last week with a narrow loss to Penrith and this win should give the team great impetus going forward, even though they’ll likely not see Bassingthwaite again until after the S.G. Ball competition concludes.
With that win the Roosters have moved up to 10th place on the ladder ahead of their first bye of the season in Round 5.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The competition for the Central Coast Roosters doesn’t commence until Saturday, 13th June.
Ron Massey Cup
The 2nd placed Glebe Dirty Reds have been well beaten in their Round 2 clash, going down 40-16 to 5th placed St Marys at St Marys on Sunday, after Saints led 18-10 at half time.
Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Aston Warwick (lock), Will Malloy (left centre), Trey Peni (left wing) and Rhys Dakin (prop) all turned out for Glebe, whilst hooker/lock Michael Coleman (suspension) and winger Emery Jolliffe (hamstring) were unavailable and Owen Flaherty did not play. Malloy and Peni were first half try scorers. Malloy now has three tries from the first two games of the season.
After trailing 18-4 after 31 minutes, the Dirty Reds got with two points of St Marys after 46 minutes when right winger James Torrens crossed for the Roosters third try, but St Marys scored the next four tries to run away with the game 40-16 in a disappointing conclusion to the game, particularly after such a strong Round 1 performance.
After Sunday’s loss the Dirty Reds drop to 6th place ahead of next Sunday’s clash against 5th placed Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworthville.
Sydney Shield
The 2nd placed Glebe Dirty Reds have narrowly lost their Round 2 match, defeated 24-22 by 3rd placed St Marys at St Marys on Sunday, after scores were locked up at 10-10 at half time.
Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Micah Leaupepe Perkins (fullback),
Jonti Morshead-Feildel (right wing) and Ryder Williams (bench utility) turned out for Glebe. Leaupepe Perkins and Williams were both second half try scorers.
Glebe was competitive with St Marys throughout the match, despite trailing St Marys 24-10 at the 48-minute mark. After Williams’ converted try in the 66th minute, the Dirty Reds were just 24-22 behind and were charging home. However, Glebe couldn’t cash in on the opportunities and St Marys held on to win by two points, 24-22.
After the loss the Dirty Reds drop to 5th place on the ladder ahead of next Sunday’s clash against 6th placed Wentworthville Magpies at Wentworthville.
