The Sydney Roosters Jesey Flegg, with more than a team of players unavailable, have beaten one of the competition’s leading lights, with a six try to three victory over the West Tigers at Lidcombe Oval.

NSW Cup

The 6th placed Sydney Roosters have gone down 68-8 to the 11th placed Western Suburbs Magpies at Lidcombe Oval on Sunday, after the Magpies led 48-0 at half time.

With Reece Foley, Cody Ramsay, Toby Rodwell, Junior Tupou, Tommy Talau, Rex Bassingthwaighte and Benaiah Ioelu having played NRL on Friday, Ben Johnson (knee) and Blake Steep (knee) out injured, and a significant number of possible replacements from the Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team unavailable, the Roosters were required to field a team that was extremely depleted.

With so many players out, Egan Butcher, backing up from his short NRL stint in the middle, off the bench, on Friday, played the majority of the game in the halves, alongside Jake Elliott. something he hadn’t done since his S.G. Ball Cup days with the Club back in 2017-18. Will Malloy, who has played a fair chunk of the season with Glebe in the Ron Massey Cup, came into the side, at left centre, for his first NSW Cup game of 2026.

However, even taking into account all the players missing, the performance from the Roosters was very disappointing, to say the least, with the Magpies scoring nine tries in just the first half, with little resistance, before they finished the game with thirteen tries in total. It was the Roosters fourth successive loss, and in those losses the team has conceded 197 points.

The Roosters, particularly in the first half, had very little possession and even when they had the ball, they struggled to complete their sets. Each error was severely punished. It was the Roosters biggest defeat since returning to the competition in 2023. After 80 minutes the Roosters had completed just 16 sets and had just 39% possession.

With a little more ball in the second half, the Roosters did manage to cross for two tries, both to Junior Pauga. Pauga, who moved from right centre to right wing when Tom Rodwell left the field in the 50th minute (with what seemed to be a hamstring injury) scored both tries on the right wing, taking his tally to 10 tries from 8 games this season. Skipper Max McCathie topped the tackle count with 42, with just one miss.

With that defeat the Roosters drop to 11th on the ladder, ahead of next Sunday’s Round 16 clash with 5th placed Newtown at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 13th placed Sydney Roosters have pulled off one of the Club’s most memorable victories in this grade, beating the 3rd placed Wests Tigers 26-18 a Lidcombe Oval on Sunday, after scores were locked at 12-12 at half time.

With Itula Seve, Aholola Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Zac Sarfati, Enzo Griffier, Jackson De Lisle and Jackson Pennell part of a significant injury list, Darcy Smith, Eddy Cayless, James Finegan, Lui Lee and Carter Mareko on Under 19s State of Origin duty, Rex Bassingthwaighte, Toby Rodwell, Jake Elliott, Reece Foley, Jaxson Allen, Charleston Te Rore, Josiah Fesolai and Kanaan Magele playing higher grades this weekend, and Jack Ewer suspended, the Roosters had one of their most extensive list of unavailable players, heading into this Round 15 clash, that the Club has ever endured in this grade.

A Jersey Flegg Cup debut was handed to 17-year-old forward Caleb Fesolai, a member of the Club’s S.G. Ball Cup premiership winning team of 2026, whilst forward Julius Mitchell, in his third season of Jersey Flegg Cup, was given the honour of captaining the side by Coach Anthony Barnes.

Despite the plethora of players unavailable the Roosters ran in six tries to three against one of the competition’s heavyweights. Only errant goal kicking (one from six), from the Roosters, kept the scoreline tight throughout.

The Roosters began with a bang, scoring two unconverted tries in the first 10 minutes. Left centre John-Paul Donevski was first to score, in the left corner, after left winger Kade Maguire did exceptionally well to knock a cross-field bomb back into the arms of Donevski before being Maguire was bundled into touch. The second Roosters try came before the Wests Tigers could touch the ball again with Kiwi right winger E.J. Mahu-Delamare scoring in the right corner, after nice lead up work by halfback Bo Peisley and fullback Jackson Stewart.

The Wests Tigers took the lead with back-to-back converted tries in the 22nd and 25th minutes to lead 12-8. Ten minutes from half time, from a scrum deep in the Wests Tigers half, Stewart sliced through a hesitant defence to score wide out on the left. A third conversion attempt by Peisley was missed and the 12-12 scoreline would stay in place for the remainder of the first half.

The Roosters opened the second half scoring when right centre Brooklyn Heath, on the last tackle, received a pass on the blind side and had an easy passage to the tryline. E.J. Mahu-Delamere took over the goal kicking but the result was the same and the Roosters led 16-12. With 27 minutes remaining the Wests Tigers scored and converted and for the first time in the match the home team was in front. It appeared that the Wests Tigers would take control of the match from there and the Roosters would be denied the chances of a major upset.

However, the Roosters didn’t lose their belief and with 21 minutes remaining the Roosters re-took the lead with a try in the right corner to Mahu-Delamere after a nice overhead pass from Brooklyn Heath. The double to the Roosters Academy winger was his third double in just his fourth Jersey Flegg Cup game. A third goal kicker – five eighth Keone Anitelea-Tsioussis – was introduced, with the identical result, but the Roosters led 20-16 entering the final 20 minutes.

The Roosters defended bravely for much of the last 20 minutes before left centre John-Paul Donevski crossed, for the second time in the match, in the 76th minute, after some nice lead up work from Jackson Stewart and Kade Maguire. The first Roosters successful conversion of the day, from Anitelea-Tsioussis, gave the Roosters a 26-18 lead and secured a fourth victory of the season for the Roosters.

With that win the Roosters have risen to 12th on the ladder ahead of their Round 16 clash with the 5th placed Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Wentworth Park next Sunday.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The Central Coast Roosters, who finished 10th in 2025, have opened their 2026 season with a 22-22 draw with last year’s 8th placed Wests Tigers at Lidcombe Oval on Sunday, after the Wests Tigers led 14-12 at half time.

With co-captains Tyra Dymock (Under 19s Origin) and Aaliyah Paki (suspended) unavailable and only Te Raukura Leafe (prop) from the 30 strong Roosters NRLW squad playing in this Round One clash, the Roosters team wasn’t at its strongest, but the Club fielded a very competitive team, nonetheless.

It was a poor start by the Roosters, who conceded three tries in the first 20 minutes to fall behind 14-0. However, a high tackle penalty just inside the Wests Tigers half to the Roosters in the 25th minute saw interchange prop Felila Fakalelu burst the defensive line and find the ever-reliable Meg Mcphail, the Roosters half, in support, who raced away to score under the posts, and convert her own try.

The Roosters second try started inside the Roosters half when hard running left centre

Majayda Darcy shattered the Wests Tigers defensive line and found speedy right winger Tia Cook in support. Cook converted her own try and the Wests Tigers lead was cut to 14-12, which they were to hold for the remainder of the first half.

The Wests Tigers stretched the lead to 18-12 early in the second half but the Roosters did hit back when the rampaging Felila Fakalelu ran 20 metres through the Wests Tigers defence to score near the posts, and after Cook’s conversion the scores were locked at 18-18. The Roosters took the lead for the first time in the afternoon 15 minutes from full time when left edge back rower Jemma Wooden scored wide out, after anther powerful run from the impressive new recruit Majayda Darcy. The conversion was missed but the Roosters led 22-18.

The Roosters dominated field position and possession for most of the last quarter of the game but couldn’t score the points to put the game to bed and then a Roosters dropped bomb in the final minutes of the game proved vital. On the third tackle from the ensuing scrum, Wests Tigers fullback Breeze E’e scored in the left corner, despite the presence of a number of Roosters defenders. The sideline conversion was missed and the teams shared the competition points in the first round of the new season.

With that draw, the Central Coast sit in 7th spot on the ladder, ahead of their Round 2 clash with the Parramatta Eels at Tuggerah next Saturday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have slumped to a seventh successive loss, with a 24-18 loss to 5th placed Penrith Brothers at Penrith on Saturday, after Glebe led 18-6 at half time.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Emery Jolliffe (left wing), Rhys Dakin (prop) and Michael Coleman (lock) all suited up for Glebe.

Glebe dominated the first half to lead 18-0 after 37 minutes and looked set to win its first match in two months, but in what has become customary of late, the Dirty Reds errors became very costly and Penrith ran in four straight tries to take the game 24-18.

Despite the loss, Glebe remains in 9th spot on the ladder ahead of their Round 11 clash with the 8th placed Hills Bulls next Sunday at St Marys, as part of the Ron Massey Cup’s Magic Round.

Sydney Shield

The 7th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have suffered a third successive loss, going down 40-18 to 8th placed Penrith Brothers on Saturday in Penrith, after Glebe led 12-6 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Ryder Williams (five eighth), Jasper Catton (right edge backrow) and Jacob Tinsley (hooker) all turned out for Glebe, with Tinsley leading the team and Williams scoring two tries, one in each half.

After Glebe were so competitive in the first half, the second half was a one act affair, with Penrith running in six second half tries, as Glebe slumped to its sixth loss of the season.

With that loss, Glebe falls to 8th on the ladder ahead of their Round 11 clash with the 7th placed Hills Bulls next Sunday at Wentworth Park.
