The Sydney Roosters are very saddened to hear of the death, on Sunday (July 19), of Roosters Player No. 814 Steve ‘Boomer’ Keir.
Keir joined the Roosters in 1986 after playing two seasons and 11 first grade games with the Canberra Raiders (1983 -84) and a season with West Belconnen in the local ACT competition in 1985.
Steve spent the bulk of the 1986 season playing reserve grade (14 games) at the Roosters but what a season it was! The Club won the premiership that season, with Keir playing on the right wing in the victorious Grand Final team. It was the Roosters first reserve grade premiership in 37 years. The team celebrated the 50thanniversary of that premiership this year and although Steve was very excited to mix again with his 1986 team mates, unfortunately Steve’s health was in such a state that he was too unwell to travel, to Sydney from the ACT, when the players got together earlier this month.
In 1986 Keir appeared twice in first grade for the Roosters, as a replacement player in Rounds 20 and 21. In 1987 he joined the North Sydney Bears, where he added a further 4 first grade appearances.
Our thoughts are with Steve’s widow Di, his three children, and all his extended family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
