The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have once again posted 50 points in victory, with a thumping 50-14 win away from home against the team second on the ladder.
NSW Cup
The 8th placed Sydney Roosters have posted 50 for the second time in three weeks with a 50-14 thrashing of the 2nd placed Newcastle Knights in Newcastle last Friday, after the Roosters led 22-10 at half time.
The club went into the match missing Blake Steep (knee) and Dietrich Roache (leg) with injury, whilst Taylor Losalu, Cody Ramsay and Egan Butcher were on NRL duty on Friday night. 8 of the Roosters 17 that played on Friday night had played S.G. Ball Cup (Under 19s) for the Club either this season or last, seasons in which the Club won back-to-back titles.
It was the Roosters finest performance of the season as they ran in nine tries to three against a team that had lost only four games all season previously. Although the Knights opened the scoring in the 3rd minute to lead 6-0, the Roosters dominated from that moment on, led by halfback Toby Rodwell. Rodwell, with 18 points (a try and 7 goals from 9 attempts), had three try assists, three line break assists, four tackle busts and one forced drop out. 18-year-old centre Brooklyn Heath, just as he did two weeks earlier when the Roosters ran in 50, scored another hat trick, taking his season NSW Cup try tally to seven, from just five games.
The Roosters had an 89% completion rate as they continually tore the Knights defence apart. They notched up ten line breaks to two, had 35 tackle busts and missed just eight tackles. Fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte led the run metres with 217, whilst captain Max McCathie once again led the tackle count with 33.
With that result the Roosters rise to 6th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 22 clash with the 12th placed St George Illawarra Dragons at Wentworth Park on Saturday.
The win, the Roosters third in succession, has put the team in a strong position to qualify for this season’s semi finals (top 5), for the first time since re-entering the competition in 2023. They will, however, probably need to win three of their final four matches, which are against the Dragons (12th), Bulldogs (9th), Panthers (1st) and Magpies (10th). All matches, with the exception of the one against Penrith, will be at Wentworth Park.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The 10th placed Sydney Roosters have made it five wins from their last six games with a 46-28 win over 11th placed Newcastle in Newcastle on Saturday, after the Roosters led 22-12 at half time.
The Roosters were again without a plethora of eligible players with an injury list headed by Aholoka Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Lui Lee, Zac Sarfati, Jackson Pennell, Jackson De Lisle and Enzo Griffier whilst aged eligible players Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Jake Elliott, Kanaan Magele, Charleston Te Rore, Brooklyn Heath and Rex Bassingthwaighte played in the NSW Cup team on Friday.
Despite the absence of these players, the Roosters continued their fine recent form, running in eight tries to five, to give the Club a clean sweep of the senior men’s matches played in Newcastle over the weekend.
Kiwi right winger E.J. Mahu-Delamere scored the first three tries of the match, taking his very impressive 2026 Flegg tally to 11 tries from 9 games, whilst left edge back rower, Darcy Smith, backing up from a short appearance in the NSW Cup the night before, scored a try in each half in a solid 80 minute performance.
It was a high-quality game with both teams having high completion rates and putting immense pressure on the defences.
Despite the win the Roosters remain in 10th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 22 clash with competition leaders St George Illawarra at Wentworth Park next Sunday.
The Roosters are out of semi final contention and play the top three teams in the next three weeks, but if they continue to play with the commitment of recent matches they’ll be very competitive against those top teams.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The 6th placed Central Coast Roosters have suffered a second successive loss, going down 24-8 to competition leaders the Newcastle Knights in Newcastle on Saturday, after the Knights led 10-4 at halftime.
The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Talea Tonga (halfback), Tatum Bird (hooker), Taneisha Gray (left edge) and Nikiah Campbell (right edge), as well as the four NRLW development players Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Logan Fletcher (fullback), Mia Vaotu’ua (five eighth) and Anastasia Leatupue (right centre).
The Roosters tried hard against a very complete rugby league team, coached by Ben Hagan, the father of Roosters interchange hooker, Scarlett Hagan, but were outclassed. The Roosters scored a try in each half, the first to hooker Tatum Bird and the second to 19-year-old replacement left winger Jayda Durham, in just her second match in the competition. The Durham try was scored after some smart lead up work by fullback Logan Fletcher and left centre Majayda Darcy.
With Knights halfback Sybella Pike in the sinbin in the second half, whilst they led 16-4, the Roosters were unable to take advantage of the extra player during her absence, ending the realistic possibility of an upset win.
With that result the Roosters drop to 7th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 8 clash with the 5th placed Illawarra Steelers at Tuggerah next Saturday.
Ron Massey Cup
The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have slumped to their 13th successive loss with a 51-20 defeat at the hands of the 4th placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Hammondville on Saturday, after the Bulldogs led by 34-10 at half time.
Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup players Ben Johnson (right centre), Emery Jolliffe (right wing) and Rhys Dakin (prop) played for Glebe, as did Roosters Jersey Flegg squad members Tyrone Hurt-Pickering (five eighth) and Kynan Toevai (prop). Johnson returned to the game on Saturday after being out with a knee injury since early May.
Jolliffe crossed for and Hurt-Pickering kicked two goals from three attempts.
Despite that loss Glebe remain in 9th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 17 clash with the last placed Manly Leagues at Wentworth Park on Sunday, where they’ll be striving to win for the first time since the 12th April.
Sydney Shield
The 8th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have been beaten for a fourth successive match, going down 26-16 to last placed Moorebank at Hammondville on Saturday, after scores were locked at 10-10 at half time. The Dirty Reds had beaten Moorebank 58-16 earlier in the season and this was just the Rams’ second win of 2026.
Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg players Jabob Tinsley (hooker), Nathan Lopamaua (prop) and Jasper Catton (left edge) suited up for Glebe. Catton was one of three try scorers for Glebe.
With that loss Glebe remain in 8th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 17 bye next weekend.
