The Roosters NSW Cup team, after four successive wins, have gone down narrowly to the St Illawarra Dragons in a significant blow to the Roosters finals chances.

The 6th placed have suffered a major blow to their 2026 finals hopes, with a 24-20 Round 22 loss to the 12th placed St George Illawarra at Wentworth Park on Saturday, after the Dragons led 8-6 at half time. It was the Roosters first loss since Round 16.

The club went into the match missing Blake Steep (knee) and Dietrich Roache (leg) with injury, whilst Tommy Talau, Cody Ramsey and Egan Butcher were on NRL duty.

After winning their four previous matches, the Roosters put in a well below par performance at a vital time of the season.

After the Dragons scored the first two tries of the match to lead 8-0, the Roosters posted their only try of the first half when hard-working lock Jaxson Rahme dived over, near the posts, from dummy half, four minutes from half time.

The Roosters conceded a converted try off the first set of the second half to fall further behind at 14-6, an awful start to the half for the Roosters. However, after left winger Junior Pauga (44th minute) and fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte (49th minute) scored for the Roosters, the home team had taken the lead (16-14) for the first time in the match, and were back on track for a fifth successive win.

However, the Roosters weren’t able to go on with it, due to a combination of errors, both with, and without the ball. With tries in the 59th and 65th minute the Dragons opened up what was to be a winning lead (24-16). The Roosters did score again, in the 77th minute, a second try to Junior Pauga, bring his season tally to 11 tries from 12 games, but time ran out and the Roosters were beaten 24-20.

The Roosters made seven line-breaks to four, and 36 tackle-breaks to 20, but weren’t as effective in the Dragons red zone, as they have been in recent weeks.

Jaxson Rhame topped the Roosters tackle count with 40, whilst fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte led the running metre count with 175.

With that loss the Roosters drop to 9th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 23 clash with the 7th placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Wentworth Park on Sunday. It is likely the Roosters will now need to win their final three regular season matches to qualify for the finals for the first time since re-entry in 2023.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 10th placed Sydney Roosters have continued their stellar recent form, winning their sixth game from their last seven, in defeating competition leaders St George Illawarra 26-14 at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the scores were locked at 6-6 at half time.

The Roosters were again without a plethora of eligible players with an injury list headed by Aholoka Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Lui Lee, Zac Sarfati, Jackson Pennell, Jackson De Lisle, Jaxson Allan, and Enzo Griffier, suspension for Eddy Cayless, whilst aged eligible players Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Rex Basingthwaighte, Jake Elliott, Kanaan Magele, Charleston Te Rore and Brooklyn Heath played in the NSW Cup team on Saturday.

The Roosters opened the scoring in the 24th minute when winger Kade Maguire crossed over, after the Roosters went down the short side close to the Dragons line. The Carter Mareko conversion allowed the Roosters to lead 6-0. A converted try to Dragons’ prop Viliame Amone in the 32nd minute tied the scores up at 6-6, where they would stay until the second half resumed.

The Roosters scored first in the second stanza after five eighth Ryder Williams broke the Dragons line and sent a clever flick pass inside to fullback Jackson Stewart to score in the 46th minute. The conversion was missed by Mareko, but the Roosters were back in front, 10-6. The Roosters next try may well have been the one that got the Roosters their victory. The Dragons were attacking the Roosters line and had an overlap on their left but Roosters right winger E.J. Mahu-Delamere got himself into the passing lane, to not just deny the Dragons a try, but he then raced 90 metres downfield untouched to score. Although Mareko missed the conversion, the Roosters had stretched their lead to 14-6, a vital eight-point lead, after 51 minutes. It was Mahu-Delamere’s 12th try from just 10 Jersey Flegg Cup games.

A bomb to the right corner saw Dragons’ winger Tom Rumble score soon after, in the 54th minute, The conversion was missed but the competition leaders were right back in the game, trailing by just four, with plenty of time on the clock.

The combination of S.G. Ball Cup player of the year, halfback Carter Mareko, and premiership winning captain Darcy Smith, was responsible for stretching the Roosters lead to ten, after Mareko put a lovely grubber kick into the in-goal for Smith to score, and then Mareko converted for a 20-10 lead, with 17 minutes remaining.

Smith made it a double for the day in the 72nd minute, after prop Peter Benjamin Uini put five eighth Williams into the backfield, before Williams found Smith in support. With the Mareko conversion the Roosters were safely home, leading 26-10. It was the second successive week that left edge forward Smith crossed for a double.

A try to Dragons left centre Tom Kirk in the 77th minute from a lovely chip kick from halfback Shadi Hammoud narrowed the Roosters lead to 26-14, but there was little time for the Dragons to deny the Roosters their much-deserved victory. It was the Roosters 8th win of the season, whilst it was just the Dragons 3rd loss of 2026. Roosters five eighth Ryder Williams, a one-time Titans Top 30 player at just 18 years of age, played a major role in The Roosters victory in just his fifth match for the Club.

Despite the win the Roosters remain in 10th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 23 clash with the 2nd placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Wentworth Park on Sunday.

The Bulldogs game is the middle leg of a three-game sequence in which the Roosters play the top three teams in the Jersey Flegg Cup. In their current form they’ll continue to be highly competitive against all opposition, irrespective of their place of the ladder.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The competition took a week off due to the NRLW Magic Round. The 7th placed Central Coast Roosters next match is a Round 8 clash with the 5th placed Illawarra Steelers at Tuggerah next Saturday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have won their first match in 16 weeks with a comprehensive 43-18 defeat of last placed Manly Leagues at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Dirty Reds led 24-12 at half time.

Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup players Kyron Fekitoa (right centre), Emery Jolliffe (right wing) and Rhys Dakin (prop) all played for Glebe, as did Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Dom Farrugia (left wing), Tyrone Hurt-Pickering (five eighth), Kynan Toevai (prop), Jasper Catton (left edge) and Nathan Lopamaua. Fekitoa and Catton were try scorers for Glebe, whilst Dom Farrugia kicked seven from seven for the home side.

Glebe ran in seven tries to three in posting just their third victory of the season and consigning Manly Leagues to their 16th loss of 2026. Glebe fullback James Tautaiolefua was instrumental in the victory having a hand in a number of tries and scoring a spectacular 92 metre individual try of his own.

Despite the win Glebe remain in 9th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 18 clash with competition leaders Ryde-Eastwood at Lidcombe on Saturday.

Sydney Shield

The 8th placed Glebe Dirty Reds had a bye Round 17 bye this weekend.

With those bye points Glebe still remain in 8th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 18 clash with 6th placed Ryde-Eastwood at Lidcombe on Saturday.
