The Central Coast Roosters NSW Women’s Premiership team have qualified for the 2026 finals, despite losing their final round match to the Rabbitohs.
NSW Cup
The 6th placed Sydney Roosters had the bye in the final round of the competition, completing their regular season schedule last week with 13 wins and 9 losses. To qualify for the finals for the first time since re-admission in 2023, the Roosters needed the Knights to defeat the Warriors in New Zealand on Sunday. The match finished in a 10-10 draw, denying the Roosters a finals spot by a solitary competition point.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The 11th placed Sydney Roosters had the bye in the final round of the competition, completing their season last week with 8 wins and 13 losses. With the completion of the final round matches, the Roosters finish the season in 10th place.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The Central Coast Roosters, who commenced the final round of the regular season in 3rd place on the competition ladder, have qualified for the 2026 finals series, despite a 28-10 loss to 2nd place South Sydney at Redfern Oval on Saturday. It will be the Central Coast’s first finals series since its premiership winning season in 2020.
The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Talea Tonga (halfback), Taniesha Gray (left edge), Eliza Lopamaua (bench), Tatum Bird (bench hooker) and Nikiah Campbell (right edge), as well as development players Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Logan Fletcher (right wing), Mia Vaotu’ua (five eighth) and Anastasia Leatupue (right centre).
Shawden Burton was unavailable, as was Mia Wood, who deputised for Jayme Fressard in the NRLW, whilst Taneisha Gray could only play the first half in the NSW Women’s Premiership clash before heading off for 18th player duties in the NRLW. NRLW squad members Marcie Carlile and Keighley Simpson remain on the sideline, for the rest of the season, with knee injuries.
The Roosters had their opportunities against the Rabbitohs but failed to capitalise when in good field position, posting just one try in each half. After falling behind 10-0 after just 7 minutes, the Roosters posted their first half try in the 25th minute when halfback Talea Tonga found an unmarked Sharni Waters holding her space on the left wing and lobbing a lovely long pass to find the left winger on the bounce. Logan Fletcher converted from the touchline to get the Roosters within 4 points of Souths. It was Waters 13th try of the season, in 11 games and Souths led 10-6 at the break.
The Rabbitohs picked up the first two tries of the second half to open up a match winning 22-6 lead after 53 minutes but the Roosters did score not too long after through the individual brilliance of 17-year-old five eighth Mia Vaotu’ua. After just one tackle of a rare set inside Souths 30, the visionary schoolgirl saw the fullback defending in the line and kicked perfectly for the in-goal area, where she scooped on the ball herself to score, without another player in sight. The conversion was unsuccessful. The Rabbitohs hit back again in the 66th minute to complete the scoring, winning the match 28-10.
With that loss the Roosters drop to 5th on the table but fortunately a loss by the Illawarra Steelers to minor premiers Newcastle was enough for the Roosters to hold their place in the Top 5. Next Sunday the Roosters play 4th place Mounties at Leichhardt Oval in the elimination minor semi-final.
Ron Massey Cup
The season has been completed for the Dirty Reds, finishing the year in 9th place, with just three wins and fifteen losses.
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (3rd) and minor premiers Ryde-Eastwood played in the preliminary final on the weekend. The Hawks won 20-16 and now played 2nd placed St Marys in the 2026 Grand Final.
Sydney Shield
The season has been completed for the Dirty Reds, finishing the year in 7th place, with just five wins and eleven losses.
The Wentworthville Magpies (3rd) and Mounties (2nd) played in the preliminary final on the weekend. The Mounties won 66-18 and now play minor premiers St Marys in the 2026 Grand Final.
