In another strong weekend for the Roosters junior representative teams, the Club has won all of the six matches it contested, with four of the teams remaining undefeated through the early rounds of the 2025 season.
S.G. Ball Cup (Men’s Under 19s)
The Sydney Roosters remain undefeated after three rounds of the S.G. Ball Cup competition with a 14-12 victory over defending champions St George at Henson Park, Marrickville. The Roosters went into the match severely depleted after losing captain and hooker Jaxson Allen (hamstring), prop Kanaan Magele (hamstring), fullback Rex Bassingthwaite (shoulder), bench forward Eddy Cayless (concussion protocols) and Lachlan Dooner (suspended) from the team that played in the first two rounds. Unfortunately, the highly promising Bassingthwaite has played his last match of 2025, requiring a full reconstruction on his damaged shoulder.
Despite the loss of personnel and a 12-6 half time deficit, the Roosters improved their handling somewhat in the second half to put enough pressure on the Dragons right side defence to score sufficient points to post the victory. Middle forwards Peter Benjamin Uini, Phillip Lavakeiaho and Itula Seve, on debut, were strong for the winners, whilst interchange forward Coby Thomas also impressed. Left wing Academy product Lui Lee, also on debut, scored the winning try with some lovely footwork that the Dragons defence had no answer for. A year younger than most S.G. Ball players, Lee and right winger E.J. Mahu-Delamere were also very effective in defusing kicks and rucking the ball out from their own end.
The Roosters play another undefeated team, the Canberra Raiders, next Saturday, at Mascot, and at least three of the players who missed the clash with the Dragons should be available for selection.
Harold Matthews Cup (Men’s Under 17s)
With the Sydney Roosters having a Harold Matthews Cup bye in Round 3, all eyes were on the lads from the Central Coast on Saturday at Kogarah. Looking for their first win of the season, the Central Coast Roosters overcame a 10-6 half time deficit to defeat the Dragons 24-14. Roosters’ half and captain Carter Mareka was the dominant player of the match, scoring one try and having a hand in two others.
The Central Coast will play the Western Suburbs Magpies (two from three) next Saturday at Woy Woy, whilst the Sydney Roosters will match up against the Penrith Panthers (one from three) on Saturday at Mascot in Round 4 action.
Tarsha Gale Cup (Women’s Under 19s)
The Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy team have made it back-to-back wins by defeating the St George Dragons 24-8 at Kogarah, after leading 14-0 at half time. The Roosters were far too good for the Dragons with half Jayla Dicker, fullback Logan Fletcher and hooker Mahlie Cashin leading the attacking raids.
The Roosters have a Round 4 bye next weekend.
Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women’s Under 17s)
The Central Coast Roosters have continued with their fine form with another big win. The Roosters have beaten the St George Dragons 50-2 (ten tries to nil) after racing to a 50-0 lead after just 47 minutes of play, despite missing a number of key players.
Once again halves Talea Tonga and Mia Vaotuua were in the thick of what the Roosters did with the ball. Defensively, though, the Roosters are even more impressive and have yet to concede a try through three rounds of the 2025 season. They seem very well placed to challenge for the title.
Next weekend the Roosters have a bye.
Laurie Daley Cup (Men’s Regional Under 18s)
In an amazing game of rugby league at Lithgow, the Central Coast Roosters have won again, this time beating the Western Rams 30-28 after trailing 28-18 with just nine minutes remaining. All three late tries were scored by left winger Bodie Jeffreys, who scored four on the day, after scoring the team’s first try in the sixth minute of the game.
The Roosters halves Isaac Fotu-Moala and Brok Elliott orchestrated the victory with Fotu-Moala brilliant in the second half when the Roosters looked certain to be defeated. The final set of six in the match when the Roosters marched 90 metres downfield to set up the winning try for Jeffries off a Fotu-Moala kick was just superb and showed what great heart is in this team.
The Roosters will look to make it three from three next Saturday when they take on the North Coast Bulldogs (who are also two from two in 2025) in their first home game of the season at Woy Woy.
Andrew Johns Cup (Men’s Regional Under 16s)
The back-to-back premiers, the Central Coast Roosters, continued their unbeaten run, that stretches back to early March, 2023 with another comprehensive victory, this time beating the Western Rams 38-22 in Lithgow. Scoring eight tries, five in the first 18 minutes, the Roosters were once again far superior for their opposition. Hooker Nate Ross and lock Samuel Michie impressed for the Roosters, whilst left centre Allan Larder made it five tries in two weeks, with a double this week.
The Roosters will look to continue on their winning way next Saturday when they take on the winless North Coast Bulldogs in their first home game of the season at Woy Woy.
