A Wartime Symbol, A Modern Tradition.

The Sydney Roosters’ “Wartime Bondi Blue” jersey returns in 2026, reimagined in partnership with adidas, yet unchanged in its meaning.

Inked in history and untouched by time, the jersey traces its origins back to 1944 - a year when war reshaped everyday life across Australia. Streets were quieter, homes felt emptier, and resources were scarce. Navy dye was reserved for military uniforms, leaving civilian life to adapt.

On the eastern edge of Sydney, a football club did just that.

The Roosters, then Eastern Suburbs, took the field in light blue. It wasn’t planned, nor symbolic at first - simply what was available in a time when so much was not. Bondi Blue was born from necessity.

But beyond the jersey, something deeper was taking shape.

Communities were drawing closer. Families, neighbours and strangers found strength in one another, gathering not just for the game, but for a sense of connection and normality. The players who remained represented more than a team - they carried the spirit of those who had gone to serve, and those supporting from home.

Over time, Bondi Blue came to represent far more than circumstance. It became a symbol of resilience, of sacrifice, and of unity in the face of uncertainty.

In 2026, that legacy continues. Through a new era with adidas, the Roosters honour the past while embracing the future, ensuring the story of Bondi Blue is carried forward for generations to come.

The jersey will once again be worn during ANZAC Round, a significant moment in the NRL calendar that honours the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand men and women.

When the Roosters take the field in Bondi Blue, it is more than a uniform. It is a mark of remembrance, a symbol of unity, and a legacy shared.

A wartime symbol. A modern tradition.
