After the Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team was well beaten by the Sharks at Henson Park on Saturday, the NSW Cup team went agonisingly close to pulling off a great comeback win against the Newtown Jets at the same venue

NSW Cup

The 2nd placed Sydney Roosters have been narrowly defeated 33-32 by the 6th placed Newtown Jets in Round 6 of the NSW Cup at Henson Park on Saturday, after the Jets led 22-8 at half time.

The Roosters went into the match slightly under strength with a 21 man NRL squad in Perth and injuries to winger Junior Tupou and prop Makahesi Makatoa, and conceded three converted tries in the first 10 minutes of the match to fall behind 18-0.

After that, the Roosters were very competitive and were reasonably well placed to pull off an extraordinary comeback win entering the final five minutes of the match.

Fullback Owen Flaherty opened the scoring for the Roosters in the 17th minute, when he found a flaw in the Jets right side defence, before right winger Tom Rodwell scored the second in similar fashion six minutes later. Neither try was converted but the Roosters had reduced the deficit to 10. Unfortunately, nearing half time the Roosters concede a fourth try to second rower Harrison Hassett to go into the break 22-8 behind.

After Jets interchange forward Felix Faatili scored a converted try early in the second half the Jets were leading 28-8 and seemingly headed for a comfortable win. The sides then exchanged tries with Roosters left winger Junior Pauga scoring in the 50th minute, from a classy cross kick from halfback and captain Toby Rodwell, and Jets second rower Jason Lavender in the 65th, and with 12 minutes to go the Jets were leading 32-14.

However, in a five minute period the Roosters ran in three converted tries to tie the scores at 32-32 with five minutes remaining. The first was scored when half Toby Rodwell found a rampaging Max McCathie, who was moved to right edge for the final 21 minutes of the match, as he ran 50 metres to score under the posts.

From the kick off set, lock Jaxson Rahme broke through the Jets defensive line 70 metres out before finding interchange hooker Jaxson Allen in support and he subsequently got the ball to five eighth Reece Foley, who raced 35 metres to the line. With the conversion the Jets lead was cut to 32-26.

On the third tackle of the next set Jaxson Allen took off from dummy half, and in a 70-metre run to the line beat eight defenders, showing the exceptional speed, we’ve seen in the S.G. Ball Cup and Jersey Flegg Cup, to score near the posts and the Toby Rodwell conversion locked the scores up at 32-32.

Unfortunately, a simple hit up error from the next set gave the Jets possession and field position, which they were able to control for most of the remainder of the game. The Jets seemed to have a few opportunities to kick a field goal, to take back the lead, and eventually took the chance in the 78th minute when halfback Riley Pollard made no mistake with the attempt from close range.

The Roosters had just two tackles with the ball from 70 metres out to try and draw or win the game but turned the ball over inside the Jets half as the siren blew. A 20 point lead was run down in spectacular fashion but the Roosters fell just short of victory.

Max McCathie, returning from injury, played 31 minutes in the middle and 21 minutes on the right edge, but topped the tackle count with 40, whilst right winger Tom Rodwell was once again very busy with 19 runs for 210 metres. Both scored tries.

With that result, the Roosters drop to 4th place on the ladder ahead of their Round 7 clash with 3rd placed Newcastle Knights at Wentworth Park on Sunday.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 11th placed Sydney Roosters have been convincingly defeated 52-12 by the 9th placed Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in Round 6 of the Jersey Flegg Cup at Henson Park on Saturday, after the Sharks led 30-6 at half time.

The Roosters were significantly under strength with a number of players on NSW Cup duty and a relatively long injury list. The Roosters were no match for a rampaging Sharks, scoring just two tries, one in each half. Interchange forward Austyn Ah Toon-Hotene, scored on debut just before half time and fullback and captain Zac Sarfati crossed just before full time. It was the Roosters fourth defeat in five games this season.

With that result the Roosters drop to 12th place on the ladder ahead of their Round 7 clash with 14th placed the Newcastle Knights at Wentworth Park on Sunday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 7th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have beaten the 6th placed Wentworthville Magpies 36-20 in Round 3 of the Ron Massey Cup at Ringrose Park on Sunday, after the Dirty Reds led 24-10 at half time.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Try Peni (left wing), Will Malloy (left centre), Kyron Fekitoa (right centre), Rhys Dakin (prop) and Michael Coleman (hooker) all suited up for Glebe. Malloy crossed for one of Glebe’s four first half tries, his 4th of the season.

Glebe conceded a try off the kick off when attempting to run the ball out of the dead ball area, but after that hiccup the Dirty Reds took control of the game and with a lead of 24-6 inside the first 30 minutes, the visitors were never in danger.

It is Glebe’s second win from three matches in 2026.

With that result the Dirty Reds have now climbed to 3rd place on the ladder ahead of next Sunday’s clash against 6th placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Wentworth Park.

Sydney Shield

Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Zac Gillette and Micah Leaupepe Perkins played for Glebe with Gillette returning from a long-term injury which had prevented him from playing so far this season. He played the final 45 minutes of the match.

The Magpies were the better side, scoring five tries to three, and notching their first win of the season. It was Glebe’s second loss of the season from three games,

With that result the Dirty Reds drop to 6th place on the ladder ahead of next Sunday’s clash against 9th placed Moorebank Rams.
