The Sydney Roosters S.G. Ball Cup team have won their way into a Preliminary Final with a thumping win over the Melbourne Storm at Leichhardt Oval.

S.G. Ball Cup (Men’s Under 19s)

The Sydney Roosters, who finished 3rd on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with seven wins and one loss, played 2nd placed Melbourne Storm on Saturday in a qualifying semi-final at Leichhardt Oval.

After being defeated 28-18 by the Storm in the final regular round of the season, the Roosters turned the tables in spectacular fashion, running in 10 tries to one, in defeating the Storm 56-6, after leading 32-0 at half time.

It was a real message to the rest of the competition, showing that the Round 9 defeat, the first by the Sydney Roosters in this competition since March 1, 2025, was indeed an aberration, and not a reflection of the Roosters’ prospects of back-to-back premierships.

The Roosters welcomed back premiership right winger E.J. Mahu-Delamere, who missed the entire regular season with a shoulder injury and he was very solid on return. The Roosters had three players who crossed for doubles; fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte, right edge forward James Finegan and lock Eddy Cayless, who scored his double in back-to-back sets, the second of which was a 50 metre dash to the line, off a lovely Darcy Smith inside pass.

Left winger Joshua Fesolai opened the scoring in the 8th minute, scoring his 7th try of the season. In the only possible downside of the victory, Fesolai couldn’t complete the match after receiving a leg knock four minutes from fulltime. Other try scorers were left centre Lui Lee, interchange middle Caleb Fesolai, twin brother of Joshua, and halfback Carter Mareko, who also kicked 8 goals from 10 attempts and had a hand in many of the Roosters tries.

Prop Itula Seve, who played all but 17 minutes of the match, was simply outstanding.

With the victory the Roosters go straight into a Preliminary Final in a fortnight, where they will play the winner of next weekend’s semi final between minor premiers South Sydney and 5th placed Parramatta. It will be the Roosters 5th preliminary final from the past six seasons.

The Central Coast Roosters season is over. The team, coached by Adam McEwan, finished in 17th place on the competition table, with one win and seven losses.

Harold Matthews Cup (Men’s Under 17s)

The Sydney Roosters, who finished 6th on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with five wins and three losses, played 7th placed Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on Saturday in an elimination semi-final at Leichhardt Oval.

The Roosters, who lead 14-0 at half time, went on to beat Manly-Warringah 26-6 and have advanced to week two of the finals.

The Roosters opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Manly dropped a bomb near their tryline and fullback Harper Boothroyd pounced on the loose ball to score wide out. The Roosters extended the lead to 8-0 in the 22nd minute when left centre Manamoui Toia crossed out wide after a nice backline move where the pace and skill of five eighth Samuel Large was key.

Clever hooker Caleb Zahra was next to score for the Roosters when he beat three defenders to the line from dummy half after 26 minutes. The Charlie Webb conversion gave the Roosters a 14-0 lead which they kept to beyond half time.

Manly got back into the match nine minutes into the second half when centre Cooper Everleigh scored for the Sea Eagles. The Roosters led 14-6 from that time and Manly had a number of opportunities to post a second try but through a mixture of good defence and limited attack the Roosters held out the Sea Eagles and then wrapped up the game with late converted tries to prop Seu Fidow and right edge back row forward Tai Skipps to win 26-6.

One possible sour note for the Roosters surround right centre Andy Toia, who left the field 23 minutes from fulltime and did not return to the game.

With the win the Roosters will now play 3rd placed Penrith at Blacktown on Saturday at 11.30 am, with the winner to play the 4th placed Illawarra Steelers in a Preliminary Final in a fortnight.

The Central Coast Roosters season is over. The team, coached by Ryan Southam, finished in 17th place on the competition table, with one win and seven losses.

Tarsha Gale Cup (Women’s Under 19s)

Minor Premiers the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy, who finished the regular season with seven wins and one loss, played 4th placed Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks on Saturday in a qualifying semi-final at Leichhardt Oval.

In a disappointing performance the Roosters have been beaten 20-18 by the Sharks, after the Sharks led 14-10 at half time.

The Roosters slow start was very costly, with the Sharks racing out to a 10-0 lead after 14 minutes. The Roosters clawed their way back into the game, firstly when Anastasia Leatupue, playing left centre, broke through the Sharks defence off a set scrum, after a nice pass from five eighth Talea Tonga in the 16th minute, before a terrific bomb from half Meg McPhail was spilled by the Sharks fullback Tegan Boyce and bounced perfectly for Roosters right centre Logan Fletcher to score the Roosters second try in the 19th minute. The scores were locked at 10-10 and the Roosters seem to be back on track. However, the Roosters conceded a third try to the Sharks, to Boyce soon after, to fall behind 14-10, the lead the Sharks held at half time.

The Roosters again drew level at 14-14 early in the second half when Tonga and Leatupue combined to send left winger Jayda Durham over in the left corner. It was Durham’s 7th try of the season.

With 13 minutes remaining prop Tyra Dymock charged at the Sharks defence and slipped a lovely ball away to Talea Tonga, who raced 40 metres to score in the left corner. For the first time in the match the Roosters held the lead at 18-14 and were well placed to advance to a preliminary final.

However, a basic error 10 metres from the Roosters tryline, within the final 10 minutes, proved to be crucial. From the ensuring scrum Sharks Interchange forward Manawanui James charged over near the posts and with the conversion the Sharks were back in front 20-18 and they held out the Roosters for the remainder of the match to win the qualifying final.

With the loss the Roosters will now play 5th placed Penrith at Blacktown on Saturday at 10.00 am, with the winner to play the 2nd placed Parramatta in a Preliminary Final in a fortnight. The Roosters were defeated in last year’s Grand Final by the Parramatta Eels.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women’s Under 17s)

The Central Coast Roosters, who finished 4th on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with six wins and two losses, played minor premiers the Parramatta Eels on Saturday in a qualifying semi-final at Ringrose Park.

The Roosters have gone down to the Eels 28-18 after the Roosters led 12-4 at half time. The Roosters opened the scoring in the 5th minute when prop Aallyah Temete carried multiple defenders over the line in a strong charge.

The Roosters extended that lead to 12-0 after 17 minutes when left winger Sienna Kennedy-Wilkie scored from a scrum 10 metres out from the Parramatta line, off some slick backline passing. It was Kennedy-Wilkie’s 11th try of the season, joining right winger Silia Tuitufu on that mark.

However, Roosters errors and a flow of possession and field possession to the Eels was swinging the match away from the Roosters soon after. The Eels ran in six straight tries in 34 minutes to take the game right away from the Roosters and went from 12-0 behind after 21 minutes to lead 28-12 after 56 minutes. A late Roosters try to fullback and captain Stella Hall shortly before fulltime left the final score at 28-18. It was the Roosters third successive loss to the Eels.

With the loss the Roosters will now play 8th placed Wests Tigers at Blacktown on Saturday at 1.00 pm, with the winner to play the 2nd placed Newcastle in a Preliminary Final in a fortnight.
