The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have consolidated their Top 4 position with a second half shut out of Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Sports Ground.

NSW Cup

The 4th placed Sydney Roosters have returned to the winners list, after defeating 8th placed Canterbury-Bankstown 28-10 at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday, after the Roosters led 12-10 at half time.

The Roosters went into the match without Egan Butcher and Cody Ramsay who played in the NRL side on Friday night, as well as the injured pair Tommy Talau (calf) and Hayden Barton (shoulder).

NSW Cup debuts were handed to three of the Roosters S.G. Ball Cup premiership side; 2026 captain and dual S.G. Ball Cup premiership second rower Darcy Smith, 17-year-old Kiwi prop and Roosters Player of the Year, Charleston Te Rore, and fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte, the Grand Final Player of the Match. A couple of other S.G. Ball Cup players who train with the NRL squad (Itula Seve; suspended and Lui Lee; hamstring injury) were unavailable.

With their inclusion, nine of the Roosters seventeen that took the field were current or former Roosters Junior Academy players, giving fans a real glimpse of what lies ahead for the Club in the years to come.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 14th minute when two former Roosters combined for the first try of the match to Bulldogs forward Josh Curran, off a nice grubber from halfback Alex Conti.

The Roosters equalled the scores in the 23rd minute when halves Reece Foley and Toby Rodwell combined to find space for 19-yer-old fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte to burst into backfield and pass to right winger Tom Rodwell to score in the corner. Rodwell’s brother’s sideline conversion gave the Roosters the lead at 6-4. The lead would stretch to 12-4 soon after when Jaxson Allen, who just came onto the field, sent Benaiah Ioelu, the man he replaced at hooker (with Ioelu moving to lock), over under the posts. With the conversion the Roosters lead 12-4.

The Roosters looked set to take that 12-4 lead into half time until an unlucky ricochet in the 38th minute landed in the arms of Bulldogs left centre Sosaia Alatini, who, as he was falling, got a pass away to left edge Logan Spinks to score out wide. With the Conti conversion the Roosters lead, at the break, was cut down to 12-10.

The Roosters ran with great purpose in the second half, posting three tries to nil to post a convincing win. The first try of the second half started right on the Roosters tryline. On the fourth tackle of the set, 20 metres out from the Roosters line, hooker Jaxson Allen went down the short side to link with five eighth Reece Foley who, in turn, got a lovely pass away to left edge Darcy Smith, on debut, who raced 35 metres downfield before passing to left winger Junor Pauga, who looked set to score before popping the ball up, as he was tackled short of the tryline, to a supporting Allen to score his 5th try of the season. A second Toby Rodwell sideline conversion stretched the Roosters lead out to 18-10.

The Roosters scored again in the 60th minute, when a scrum 15 metres out from the Bulldogs line saw Jaxson Allen pass to left centre Junior Tupou who beat his centre opponent on the outside to score out wide. The try was unconverted, Rodwell’s only miss of the day.

The Roosters wrapped up the match in the 66th minute when a simple backline movement saw Tom Rodwell score in the right corner, through some slick passing. It was Rodwell’s 2nd try of the day, his 7th of the season and his 27th of his Roosters career, in just his 31st match NSW Cup match for the Club. Toby Rodwell’s third sideline conversion of the match gave the Roosters a 28-10 win, the 6th of what is developing into a very productive season.

Once again Benaiah Ioelu was one of the Roosters best, playing 30 minutes as hooker and 48 minutes as lock. He made 37 tackles, without a miss, and had 10 runs. The back three for the Roosters were all very effective too, with left winger Junior Pauga running for 214 metres (19 runs), right winger Tom Rodwell running for 185 metres (20 runs) and debutant fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte notching up 192 metres from 16 runs. It was also not hard to be impressed with Darcy Smith on debut.

The Roosters rise to 3rd place on the ladder after the win, ahead of their Round 11 clash with 2nd placed North Sydney Bears at North Sydney Oval next Saturday.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 12th placed Sydney Roosters have lost their seventh match of the season, after being defeating 36-34 by 5th placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday, after the Roosters led 24-12 at half time. All that separated the teams at full time was a two-point field goal from Bulldogs five eighth Bronson Rueben in the dying minutes of the match.

The Roosters were once again missing a number of players with an injury list comprising of, but not restricted to, Josiah Fesolai, Lachlan Dooner, Jackson Stewart, Enzo Giffier, Jackson De Lisle, Jackson Pennell and Aholoka Toia, whilst Kanaan Magele and Jaxson Allen once again played in the NSW Cup.

With those absentees the Club elevated S.G. Ball Cup premiership players E.J. Mahu-Delamere, James Finegan and Eddy Cayless (all back-to-back premiership S.G. Ball Cup premiership winners), Nathan Lopamaua (S.G. Ball Cup Grand Final 18th Man) and Carter Mareko (S.G. Ball Cup Player of the Year) into the side, with Mahu-Delamere, Finegan and Cayless making their Flegg Cup debuts, whilst Central Coast S.G. Ball Cup players Austyn Ah Toon-Hotene and Kalen Cashin were part of the Roosters four-man bench.

It was a match the Roosters probably should have won. They raced out to an 18-0 lead after 23 minutes, with two tries to left winger Kade Maguire and one to five eighth and captain Jake Elliott. All three were converted by debutant Carter Mareko, in style. The Bulldogs struck back with two tries of their own to reduce the lead to 18-12 before a determined run, close to the line, from hooker Zac Gillett got the Roosters a fourth try, nearing half time, and the Roosters went into half time leading 24-12.

Right winger E.J. Delamere scored soon after half time to give the Roosters a 28-12 lead, one in which they should have been able to hold on to. However, possession and field position went against the Roosters heavily after that early second half try, and in under 20 minutes all the momentum was with the Bulldogs, who posted four tries in that period, to take a 34-28 lead.

A second Delamare try in the right corner was converted from the sideline by Mareko and scores were locked at 34-34, entering the final five minutes of the game. Unfortunately, for the Roosters they didn’t get another opportunity to post points and when the Bulldogs got themselves into the Roosters half, Bulldogs five eighth Bronson Reuben took a chance on a field goal attempt, 41 metres out and 15 metres in from the right touchline. The unlikely attempt hit the crossbar and went over for a two-point field goal and a 36-34 Bulldogs win.

It was the second match this season that the Roosters have gone under in the dying minutes. However, the Roosters would be encouraged by the performances of the S.G. Ball Cup players that came into the team for this match.

The Roosters remain in 12th place on the ladder despite the loss, and now go into hibernation for a few weeks, with the competition taking a break next week, and the Roosters having a bye the week after.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have slumped to a fourth successive loss after going down 40-8 to 2nd placed Mounties at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook on Saturday, after Mounties led 12-4 at half time.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Trey Peni (left wing), Will Malloy (left centre), Kyron Fekitoa (right centre) and Michael Coleman (hooker) all suited up for Glebe.

The Dirty Reds scored the first and last tries of the match, but conceded eight in between, to slump to their fifth loss of the season to a highly impressive Mounties outfit. Mounties right winger Terrell Kalo Kalo scored four ties for the visitors.

Despite the loss the Dirty Reds remain 9th place as the competition takes a break next weekend.

Sydney Shield

The 5th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have lost their fourth match of the season after being defeated 52-28 by competition leaders Mounties at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook on Saturday, after Mounties led 34-6 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Micah Leaupepe-Perkins (left centre), Jonti Morshead-Feildel (right centre), Ryder Williams (halfback) and Jacob Tinsley (hooker) all turned out for Glebe, with Tinsley leading the team.

Leaupepe-Perkins scored two tries and kicked a goal for Glebe, whilst Ryder Williams also scored a try and kicked a goal.

The Dirty Reds ran in five second half tries to win the second half 24-18, but the match was lost in the first half, when the Mounties scored six tries to one.

Despite that loss the Dirty Reds remain in 5th place on the ladder prior to the competition taking a break next weekend.
