A vital two competition points for the Sydney Roosters in the NSW Cup, after defeating Canterbury-Bankstown on Sunday, has kept their finals chances alive, with the Club moving within two points of the Top 5.

NSW Cup

The 9th placed Sydney Roosters have kept their finals hopes alive with a 32-24 defeat of 7th placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Roosters led 20-6 at half time. It was the Roosters fifth win from its last six matches, which saw the team advance to 28 competition points, two behind the 4th and 5th placed teams.

The club went into the match missing Blake Steep (knee) and Dietrich Roache (leg) with injury, whilst Egan Butcher and Cody Ramsey were on NRL duty.

A combination of some fine attacking play and a significant Bulldogs error count allowed the Roosters to score three unanswered tries in the first 13 minutes to race to a 14-0 lead. The errors gave the Roosters field position but it was the class of the Roosters backs that took advantage of that field position. A scrum play on the right side saw hooker Benaiah Ioelu link with halfback Toby Rodwell to create space for right winger Brooklyn Heath to score the first try of the match in the corner after just two minutes.

Three minutes later Rodwell linked with five eighth Reece Foley and left centre Junior Pauga to send Rodwell’s brother Tom over in the left corner, whilst another scrum play in the 13th minute saw fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte create the extra man, on the right side, and send Heath sprinting in for his second try. It was Heath’s 9th try in his 7th game, but unfortunately the 18-year-old winger injured his ankle badly soon after and took no further part in the match.

The Roosters did concede a try in the 29th minute but not long after Toby Rodwell drifted across field deep inside the Bulldogs half and cleverly flicked the ball inside to halves partner Foley to score under the posts. The Rodwell conversion gave the Roosters a 20-4 half time lead.

The Roosters should have been able to put the match away in the second half, particularly given the difficulties the Bulldogs back three were having trying to catch Toby Rodwell’s bombs. However, the Roosters struggled to complete sufficient sets and weren’t in a position often enough to put the pressure on the Bulldogs back three. On the other hand, the Bulldogs found deficiencies with the Roosters right side defence, which was reshuffled following Heath’s injury, and scored converted tries in the 44th and 47th minutes of the second half to get within four points of the Roosters.

The Roosters eventually held the ball for long enough to give Tom Rodwell a second try in the 57th minute, after some nice lead up work inside from Toby Rodwell, Foley and Bassingthwaighte and stretched the lead to 26-18 after the sideline conversion. The Roosters mistake rate continued to provide opportunities for the Bulldogs and a fourth converted try in the 67th minute to Bulldogs interchange forward Kaawyn Patterson saw the score narrow to 26-24 and the Roosters were in grave danger of an unnecessary loss. However, the Roosters steadied for the final stanza of the game and a Toby Rodwell bomb three minutes from full time bounced favourably for the Roosters and fullback Rex Bassingtwaighte was on hand to score in the left corner. The Toby Rodwell sideline conversion gave the Roosters their final score of 32-24.

With that win the Roosters rise to 6th place on the competition table, ahead of their vital Round 24 clash with competition leaders Penrith at Penrith on Friday.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 10th placed Sydney Roosters have been beaten 28-24 by 2nd placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Roosters led 12-10 at half time.

The Roosters were again without a plethora of eligible players with an injury list headed by Aholoka Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Zac Sarfati, Zac Gillett, Jackson Pennell, Jackson De Lisle, Jaxson Allan and Enzo Griffier, whilst aged eligible players Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Rex Basingthwaighte, Jake Elliott, De La Salle Va’a, Brooklyn Heath, Kanaan Magele and Charleston Te Rore continue to play in the NSW Cup team. Adding to that injury list, the Roosters lost prop Itula Seve (knee) and halfback Carter Mareko (shoulder) early in Sunday’s game.

17-year-old halfback Charlie Webb, son of Roosters head of junior recruitment and former Kiwi international Brent, was handed a debut, replacing Mareko in the first half.

After winning six of their previous seven matches, the young Roosters went into the match against the Bulldogs with plenty of confidence. With 15 minutes remaining in the match the Roosters looked set to land another Top 3 scalp, after defeating competition leaders St George Illawarra last week. The Roosters were leading 24-16 and the Bulldogs were down to 12 men, with interchange forward Fine Fale sent to the sin bin in the 65th minute.

The Roosters had set up their lead with five tries in the first 60 minutes, two each to wingers E.J. Mahu-Delamere (right) and Kade Maguire (left), and one to interchange forward Eddy Cayless. Mahu-Delamere’s first half double took his season try tally to 14, from just 11 games. At that 65th minute, up against 12 men, the Roosters seemed to have overcome the losses of Seve (11th minute) and Mareko (37th minute).

However, the period in which the Bulldogs were down to 12 men proved very costly for the Roosters. Poor handling and discipline saw the Bulldogs dominate that part of the game and it was the team with a man down that ran in two converted tries against the 13-man Roosters team. It was enough to give the Bulldogs a 28-24 lead, which they held onto in the final five minutes to pull off a surprise victory, given the circumstances. It was a most disappointing conclusion to the game from the home team.

With that result the Roosters remain in 10th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 24 clash with the 3rd placed Penrith at Penrith on Friday.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 7th placed Central Coast Roosters have produced their best performance of the season in defeating 3rd placed Illawarra 38-10 at Tuggerah on Saturday, after the Roosters led 20-6 at half time.

The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Mia Wood (fullback), Talea Tonga (halfback), Shawden Burton (hooker), Tatum Bird (bench hooker/lock), Taneisha Gray (left edge) and Nikiah Campbell (right edge), as well as development players Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Logan Fletcher (right wing), Mia Vaotu’ua (five eighth) and Anastasia Leatupue (right centre).

The Roosters ran in eight tries to two, with left winger and captain Sharni Waters scoring three tries, taking her tally to nine for the season (from eight games), whilst bench prop Felila Fakalelu scored once again, in her first match since Round 5, taking her season tally to six tries from as many games.

The Roosters took control of the game mid-way through the first half, showing far greater ball control and discipline than in their most recent matches. Young halves Talea Tonga (18) and Mia Vaotu’ua (17) were instrumental in the win, providing great service and directing the side around the park.

With that result the Roosters rise to 6th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 9 clash with 3rd placed Penrith at Rooty Hill next Saturday. The Roosters remain in semi-final contention but need to keep winning.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have gone down 44-18 to competition leaders Ryde-Eastwood at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, after the Hawks led 22-6 at half time. The Round 18 clash completes Glebe’s 2026 schedule.

Sydney Roosters N.S.W. Cup players Kyron Fekitoa (left centre), Will Malloy (left wing), Trey Peni (right wing), Ben Johnson (right centre) and Rhys Dakin (prop) all played for Glebe, as did Jersey Flegg Cup squad member Tyrone Hurt-Pickering (five eighth). Malloy was one of Glebe’s three try scorers.

The match was pretty much over in the first 30 minutes with Ryde-Eastwood scoring four tries in that period to lead 22-0. The win secured the minor premiership for the Hawks, who ran in a total of eight tries.

It has been a disappointing season for the Dirty Reds, finishing the year in 9th place, with just three wins and fifteen losses.

Sydney Shield

The 8th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have ended their 2026 season in style, with a 36-30 defeat of 6th placed Ryde-Eastwood at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, after scores were locked up at 18-18 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg players Micha Leaupepe-Perkins (left wing), Jasper Catton (left edge), Nathan Lopamaua (prop) and Kynan Toevai (bench prop) all suited up for Glebe. Both Catton and Leaupepe-Perkins scored doubles for Glebe, whilst Leaupepe-Perkins finished the game with 20 points, after also kicking six goals.

The scores were tight throughout the match and the Dirty Reds had to continually defend their line late in the game to hold the Hawks out, and secure the win. It was Glebe’s first win since June.

With that win, Glebe has finished the season in 7th place, with five wins and eleven losses.
