The Roosters NSW Cup team replicated the deeds of their NRL counterparts by defeating competition leaders Penrith, away from home, on Friday, to stay in the hunt for a spot in the finals.

NSW Cup

The 6th placed Sydney Roosters have made it six wins from their last seven matches with a 25-12 victory over competition leaders Penrith at Penrith on Friday, after scores were locked at 6-6 at half time.

It was the Roosters first victory over Penrith since the Club returned to the NSW Cup in 2023 and kept the Roosters finals chances well and truly alive. It was a victory built on defence and forward domination, not dissimilar to the NRL’s victory over Penrith the previous day.

The club went into the match missing Blake Steep (knee) and Brooklyn Heath (ankle) with injury and Jaxson Rahme through illness, whilst Cody Ramsey was on NRL duty deputising for James Tedesco. Egan Butcher (lock forward) got some much need game time after not getting on the field in either the Round 23 or Round 24 NRL matches. Butcher played the entire 80 minutes in the middle on Friday, running for 171 metres, making 45 tackles and setting up a try.

After opening the scoring in the 7th minute, with a converted try to fullback Jaxen Edgar, the Panthers dominated field position and possession but were continually repelled by a very determined Roosters defence as they attempted to add to their 6-0 lead. Eventually the Roosters forwards regained control of the middle but it took until 7 minutes before half time for the Roosters to post their first points when captain Max McCathie, off a short pass from hooker Benaiah Ioelu, barged over close to the posts. The teams went to the break locked at 6-6.

Early in the second half halfback Toby Rodwell extended that lead to 8-6 with a penalty goal, before minutes later elder brother Tom Rodwell scored in the right corner after a spilt ball close to the Panthers line was picked up by Roosters right centre Tommy Talau, who quickly released the ball to Rodwell. The conversion was missed but the Roosters now led 12-6.

With 18 minutes remaining Egan Butcher broke through the Panthers defensive line on half way and found prop Taylor Losalu in support, as he dashed a further 25 metres to the tryline. With the Toby Rodwell conversion the Roosters took their lead out to 18-6. The Roosters forwards were in total domination now and giving halfback Toby Rodwell plenty of good field position and time to pepper the Panthers back three. A Rodwell bomb 12 minutes from full time was dropped by the Panthers and five eighth Reece Foley pounced on the loose ball to score, and with the conversion the Roosters were ahead 24-6 and well placed to pull off a deserved win.

A 73rd minute Panthers converted try to centre Jesse McLean reduced the Roosters lead to 12, but with minutes remaining Toby Rodwell kicked his second field goal of the year to secure a 25-12 win to the Roosters.

Apart from Butcher’s outstanding contribution at lock forward, five other Roosters forwards (props De La Salle Va’a, Taylor Losalu, Aston Warwick, Charleston Te Rore and edge forward Max McCathie) all ran for over 100 metres. Hooker Benaiah Ioelu topped the tackle count with 48.

Despite that win the Roosters remain in 6th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 25 clash with 9th placed Western Suburbs at Wentworth Park on Sunday. This is the Roosters final regular season match of 2026 (they have a bye in Round 26) and if the Roosters are to play finals they must, as a minimum, win this final game.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 10th placed Sydney Roosters have narrowly lost their Round 23 clash with 3rd placed Penrith at Penrith played on Friday. The Panthers won 28-24 after leading by 18-0 at half time.

The Roosters were again without a plethora of eligible players with an injury list headed by Aholoka Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Itula Seve, Carter Mareko, Zac Sarfati, Zac Gillett, Jackson Pennell, Brooklyn Heath, Jackson De Lisle, Jaxson Allen and Enzo Griffier, whilst aged eligible players Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Rex Bassingthwaighte, Jake Elliott, De La Salle Va’a, Jackson Stewart, Kanaan Magele and Charleston Te Rore continue to play in the NSW Cup team. Right edge forward James Finegan hobbled off in the first half to add to the lengthy Jersey Flegg Cup casualty ward.

Whilst you can’t win a match in the first 25 minutes, you certainly can go a long way to losing it. On Friday, the Roosters weren’t competing with the Panthers in the first 25 minutes, and were behind 18-0 before they started to match the Panthers physically.

They went into half time behind by that score, but came out for the second half with a lot more purpose and energy. The comeback commenced in the 45th minute when 19-year-old Kiwi E.J. Mahu-Delamere, playing fullback this week, scored his 15th Jersey Flegg Cup try of 2026 in just his 11th game. Delamere found a gap between two Panthers right side defenders close to the try line, off a Ryder Williams pass. Williams’ conversion got the Roosters back within 12, and the Panthers lead was down to 6 very soon after when left edge forward Darcy Smith scored off a Williams grubber kick that was spilt by the Panthers over the line.

In the 54th minute interchange forward Eddy Cayless tied up the scores, with a dummy and run close to the Panthers line. At 18-18 with 25 minutes remaining the

Roosters were well placed to complete their comeback. The Panthers did take back the lead 24-18 in the 62nd minute before S.G. Ball Cup premiership captain Darcy Smith, playing left edge, completed his third try double from his past four games, when he ran off a Ryder Williams pass close to the try line. Scores were locked up again at 24-24.

However, the Roosters ball handling was becoming a real problem. They were struggling to complete sets and were continually handing the Panthers possession and field position. Eventually the Panthers took full advantage and interchange forward Jack Colley crossed over with 10 minutes remaining and with a 28-24 lead the Panthers were able to hold on for a victory as the Roosters were unable to mount any attacking pressure in the final stages of the game, due to their high error rate. It was a disappointing finish to what was trending to be an epic comeback. That first 25 minutes in which the Roosters fell behind 18-0 proved to be fatal.

Despite that loss the Roosters remain in 10th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 24 clash with the 5th placed Wests Tigers at Wentworth Park on Sunday. This is the Roosters final regular season match of 2026 (they have a bye in Round 26).

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 6th placed Central Coast Roosters have posted back-to-back wins with a convincing 38-14 defeat of 3rd placed Penrith at Rooty Hill on Saturday, after leading 22-8 at half time.

The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Talea Tonga (halfback), Tatum Bird (hooker), Taneisha Gray (left edge) and Mia Wood (fullback), as well as development players Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Logan Fletcher (right wing), Mia Vaotu’ua (five eighth) and Anastasia Leatupue (right centre). Nikita Campbell missed the match having travelled to Brisbane with the NRLW squad as a reserve, whilst Shawden Burton (concussion), Marcie Carlile (knee) and Keighley Simpson (knee) were also unavailable.

The Roosters began in terrific fashion, posting three tries in the first 15 minutes to open up a 16-0 lead. Prop Te Raukura Leafe was first to score when she raced 20 metres through the Panthers defence, off a pass from lock Aaliyah Paki. The second try was scored by left centre Majayda Darcy, after five eighth Mia Vaotu'ua took off from dummy half 40 metres from the Panthers line and found Darcy in support. The first two tries were converted by right winger Logan Fletcher. In the 15th minute left winger Sharni Waters scored in the left corner to make it 16-0, after a superb long pass from Vaotu’ua found the speedy Waters unmarked 20 metres out from the Panthers line.

The Panthers did strike back in the 21st minute, through prop Tiarna West, but with the Roosters leading 16-4, Roosters fullback Mia Wood scored out wide (converted by Fletcher) after some lovely lead-up work from halfback Talea Tonga, to stretch the lead to 22-4. Panthers winger Jacinta Tui crossed over in the right corner just prior to half time, leaving the Roosters ahead 22-8 at the break.

A converted try to Panthers hooker Chloe Pallister early in the second half, brought the scores much closer at 22-14 and the Roosters were now being severely challenged. However, soon after, the Roosters scoreboard dominance was restored when interchange prop Felila Fakalelu did what she has done many times this season, receiving the ball 20 metres out from the Panthers try line, and Amber Hall style, just brushed aside numerous would-be defenders on her way to the line. It was her 7th try from her 7 games in 2026. The Roosters now led 26-14 after interchange forward Tia Cook missed the conversion.

The Roosters posted two more converted tries to notch up a comprehensive 38-24 victory. Sharni Waters scored her second of the day in the 65th minute, after she picked up a spilt Panthers pass and raced 60 metres to score out wide. It was Waters’ 11th try from 9 games this season, whilst the Roosters final try was scored by prop Tyra Dymock, in the final minute, when she barged over from close range. Fletcher finished the match with five goals from six attempts, taking her 2026 points tally to 24.

With that win the Roosters rise to 5th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 10 clash with last placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore next Saturday. There are two rounds remaining of the regular season and four teams qualify for the finals. A win over the Bulldogs and a final round win over Souths will hopefully be sufficient for the Roosters to play finals for the first time since their premiership season of 2020 (finals were cancelled in 2021 after the Roosters were minor premiers).
