Roosters congratulate Michael Cheika

The Sydney Roosters have today extended their congratulations to NRL Forwards Coach & Club Coaching Specialist, Michael Cheika, on his appointment as Head Coach of the NSW Waratahs from the 2027 season.

Cheika joined the Roosters’ NRL coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season, bringing extensive experience across both rugby codes and adding significantly to the Club’s football program.

Working alongside Head Coach Trent Robinson, Cheika has played an important role with the Roosters’ forward pack while contributing his knowledge and experience across the wider football program. Robinson congratulated Cheika on his appointment and acknowledged the impact he has made during his time with the Club.

“Cheik has brought a huge amount to our group this year. His knowledge and experience are obvious, but it’s his passion for coaching and his ability to connect with people that have really stood out,” said Robinson.

“He’s embraced rugby league and our Club completely, and we’ve all benefited from having him as part of our coaching team.

“This is a great opportunity for Cheik to return to a Club that means a lot to him. He has a strong connection to the Waratahs and a proven history of success there, so we’re really pleased for him and wish him every success when he takes on the role next year.

“For now, we’ve still got plenty we want to achieve together this season, and I know Cheik’s focus will be firmly on continuing the work with our group,” he added.

Cheika said he was grateful for his time at the Roosters and excited for the next chapter.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Trent, the coaching staff and everyone at the Roosters for welcoming me in and allowing me to be part of such a high-performance environment. I’ve learned a huge amount during my time here and I’ve really enjoyed working with this group of players,” said Cheika.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to return to the Waratahs and help build something special, but for now, my full focus remains on finishing the season strongly with the Roosters,” he added.
