In a remarkable achievement the Sydney Roosters have qualified teams into the preliminary finals of all four NSWRL junior representative competitions, to be held over the Anzac Day weekend.
S.G. Ball Cup (Men’s Under 19s)
The Sydney Roosters S.G. Ball team had the weekend off after winning their qualifying final on Sunday, 13th April. They will play a preliminary final against the 2nd placed Canberra Raiders next Sunday at Lidcombe Oval with a grand final berth on the line. The two teams met in Round Four, with the Raiders winning 30-28.
Harold Matthews Cup (Men’s Under 17s)
The Central Coast Harold Matthews Cup team have won their way into a preliminary final with well deserved 36-30 win over the Sydney Roosters at Leichhardt Oval. Crucial errors in the first half by both sides gave each key attacking opportunities which both teams took advantage of. Central Coast, who were rocked by a serious lower leg injury to left centre Eli Bennett in the fourth minute, recovered quickly and led by captain Carter Mareko looked the better side early, with Mareko setting up the first try for left edge Tulsyn McCulloch and kicking a key 40/20. Sydney Roosters playmakers Lachlan Metcalfe, Charlie Webb and hooker Payton Gifford were instrumental in the best Roosters attacking raids of the first half and by half time the scores were locked at 18-18.
The match turned early in the second half with the Central Coast’s superior ball control and second phase play setting up the next four tries of the game, all to the Central Coast. Classy centre Josh Fesolai scored the first of them and forwards Blessing Foini and Tulsyn McCulloch completed individual doubles, to go with a 45th minute try to winger Corbin Devaney. Foini’s barnstorming runs were a real headache for the Sydney Roosters defence.
With the Central Coast leading 36-18 inside the final five minutes and seemingly headed for victory, two tries to Sydney’s left edge Ravai Tulevu, the second in the set off the kick off, which was Tuleva’s third of the game, gave Sydney one last chance to force the match into extra time. However, with the Central Coast leading 36-30 Sydney couldn’t pull off the miracle and when full time was blown the Central Coast, with seven tries to five, were the winners.
The Central Coast Roosters now play the 4th placed Newcastle Knights on Sunday at Lidcombe Oval with a grand final berth on the line.
Tarsha Gale Cup (Women’s Under 19s)
The Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy Tarsha Gale Cup team have pulled off another big comeback to win a sudden death final for the second successive week and qualify for a preliminary final, defeating the Wests Tigers 22-16 at Leichhardt Oval.
The Roosters who defeated the Newcastle Knights a week earlier in golden point, after scores were level at fulltime and again after ten minutes of extra time, found themselves 16-6 behind with 15 minutes remaining, with outside backs Fa'agase Tupuola-Palale and Katelyn Whitehead ruled out of the game with injuries suffered either side of half time. Their prospects looked bleak.
However, the Roosters never say die attitude kicked in once again and a try to left winger Manisha Seebeck in the south eastern corner with 14 minutes remaining gave the Roosters an outside chance of pulling off an unlikely escape.
With ten minutes remaining Seebeck went over for her second try of the match and Logan Fletcher landed the conversion from near the sideline to lock the scores up at 16-16. It was Seebeck’s 13th try in her 9th game of 2025 and the second successive match in which Fletcher’s goal kicking has kept the Roosters seasons prospects alive with a clutch sideline conversion.
The final nine minutes of the game saw both sides blow prime opportunities to take the lead before Fletcher positioned herself in front of the posts for a field goal attempt from 29 metres out with seconds of regular time remaining. The attempt was charged down by the Tigers but the ball ricocheted into the waiting arms of Roosters lock Luca-Bella Ngatuere-Ongley, who raced twenty metres downfield beating the Tigers fullback to the line. Before the conversion, which was successful, could be taken the final siren was heard, and the 7th placed Roosters were into a preliminary final.
The Roosters opponent next Saturday will be minor premiers the Illawarra Steelers. The Roosters lost to the Steelers 26-24 two weeks ago.
Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women’s Under 17s)
The Sydney Roosters Lisa Fiaola Cup team had the weekend off after winning their qualifying final on Sunday, 13th April. They will play a preliminary final against the 5th placed Wests Tigers next Saturday in the Illawarra with a grand final berth on the line. The two teams met in Round One, with the Roosters winning 28-0.
