
Roosters beaten by competition leaders in NSW Cup clash

The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have gone down 24-14 to competition leaders the New Zealand Warriors in their Round 11 clash at Wentworth Park
With the Roosters NRL team likely to call up four or five of the Roosters forwards, and one outside back, from this game into their team for their Round 12 match at Gosford there was great incentive for many to impressive the NRL coaching staff and for much of the game the Roosters matched it with their more fancied opponents. However, at vital stages of the game the Roosters defence let them down and consequently the Warriors ran out deserved winners.
The scores were locked at 6-6 at half time after Dominic Young crossed for the Roosters in the 22nd minute. It was Young’s third try from as many NSW Cup games this season. In the first six minutes of the second half the Roosters conceded two tries to trail 18-6 and were on the back foot for much of the second half as a result. Captain Jake Elliott scored in the 63rd minute but the Warriors struck back soon after to lead 24-10 and secure the victory.
A 9th try of the season to Roosters left winger Tom Rodwell (from 10 games) in the 76th minute completed the match scoring, with the Warriors winning 24-14.
The Roosters fielded ten NRL squad members this week. Fullback Ethan King, right winger Dom Young, halves Jake Elliott and Chad Townsend as well as forwards Xavier Va’a, Salesi Foketi, Taylor Losalu, Beniah Ioelu, Tyler Moriaty and Ethan Roberts, whilst Reece Foley was 18th man. Townsend was unable to complete the match, leaving the field in the 66th minute with an ankle injury.
With anumber of players being promoted to the NRL next week, the Roosters will face the 5th placed Newtown Jets on Saturday without them but are certain to be highly competitive despite that disadvantage. The match will be part of a Central Coast triple header involving all three Roosters senior grade teams.
