Roosters NSW Cup team returns to the winners list.

NSW Cup

After going down 54-0 to Newtown in Round 12, the Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have put that match behind them quickly by convincingly defeating the Canberra Raiders in their Round 13 clash at Wentworth Park.

The Roosters welcomed back Ethan King, Taylor Losalu, Makahesi Makatoa, Zach Dockar-Clay and Xavier Va’a from NRL duty, as well as halfback Chad Townsend from a back injury. The additional experience and class made quite the difference as the Roosters ran in nine tries to four in a 48-24 victory.

Left winger Tom Rodwell scored four tries for the Roosters and in doing so took his season tally to 13 tries from 12 games. Also, on the try scorers list for the Roosters were three Central Coast juniors (Tyler Moriaty and Owen Flaherty from the Terrigal Sharks and Jake Elliott from the Erina Eagles), right winger Trey Peni and right centre Ben Johnson.

The Roosters led 28-6 at half time but after the Raiders scored three tries in four minutes midway through the second half the Roosters lead was cut to just eight (32-24) before Tom Rodwell secured the victory for the home team with three late tries to blow the score out. Rodwell has had an outstanding year in his first season at the Club and it wouldn’t surprise to see him make his NRL debut at some stage in 2025.

S.G. Ball Cup premiership prop Phillip Lavakeiaho, who has just turned 18, made his NSW Cup debut in this match, just a week after two other S.G. Ball Cup players (Lui Lee, 17 and Itula Seve, 18) made their debuts. It’s exciting to see these promising youngsters step up into the senior grades.

After today’s win the Roosters, who have now moved to 7th on the table, play the third placed Parramatta Eels at Kellyville whilst the NRL side has a bye.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have narrowly gone down 30-28 to the Canberra Raiders in their Round 13 clash at Wentworth Park. The Roosters fielded a very young team with 12 of the 17 being Roosters Academy players and 7 being part of the Roosters premiership winning S.G. Ball Cup (Under 19s) squad.

Tries in this match were scored in patches. The Roosters scored the first two, the Raiders the next three, the Roosters the following three before the Raiders scored the final two in the last quarter to go from 28-18 behind to win the match 30-28, with both teams scoring five tries.

Both Roosters wingers posted doubles. Right winger Tyreece Tait in the 31st and 49th minute and left winger Kade Maguire in the 12th and 45th minute. Maguire took his season try tally to 13 from 11 matches with his Round 13 double.

There were plenty of good moments for the young Roosters and their next win will not be far away. Prop Fanafou Seve, returning to the side from suspension, made a number of powerful runs whilst captain Josh Durkin, moving to fullback to accommodate Reece Foley’s return to Flegg, had a very strong game.

The Roosters, who have now slipped to 11th on the table, play the second placed Parramatta Eels at Kellyville.

Ron Massey Cup

The Glebe Dirty Reds have slumped to their fourth loss of the Ron Massey Cup season, going down 34-12 to undefeated competition leaders St Marys in their Round 10 clash at St Marys.

Fielding three Roosters NSW Cup squad members (winger Emery Jolliffe, centre Turoa Williams and prop Josh Finau), Glebe were able to take a 12-6 lead into half time before the classy Saints ran in five unanswered second half tries to run away with the game. It was Glebe’s second loss to St Marys this season. Turoa Williams suffered a concussion in the 34th minute of the game and was unable to return to the field.

As a result of the loss, Glebe have dropped to fifth on the competition ladder.

The competition takes a break next weekend for the Kings Brithday weekend before Glebe plays their next match against the Hills Bulls at Crestwood Oval, Baulkham Hills on June 15.

Sydney Shield

The Glebe Sydney Shield team have won their fourth match of the 2025 season with a 36-30 victory over St Marys at St Marys.

Glebe’s team in this Round 10 clash included five Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members (centre James Khoo, winger Brooklyn Taumata, halfback Bo Peisley, hooker Jacob Tinsley and interchange player Jonti Morshead-Feildel). Glebe raced to a 16-0 lead after 15 minutes before St Marys hit back strongly to lead 24-22 at half time.

A converted try in the 56th minute gave St Marys a 30-22 lead but Glebe fought back with a converted try to Morshead-Feildel bringing Glebe within two points of the lead before a St Marys sin binning in the 73rd minute enabled Glebe to draw level with the Saints at 30-30.

In what was to be the final play of the game James Khoo raced in, under the posts, for his third try of the game to give the Dirty Reds a pulsating 36-30 win. Despite the victory Glebe remain in sixth place on the competition ladder.

The competition takes a break next weekend for the Kings Brithday weekend before Glebe plays their next match against the Hills Bulls at Crestwood Oval, Baulkham Hills on June 15.
