Roosters go down to Parramatta in both games at a windy Kellyville Park.
NSW Cup
The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have gone down 28-16 to Parramatta in their Round 14 clash at Kellyville. The Roosters lost there starting front row from last week with Props Taylor Losalu (flu) and Xavier Va’a (concussion) joining hooker Zach Dockar-Clay (rested) on the sideline. Jersey Flegg Cup forward Zack Visconti, in his fifth season at the Club, made his NSW Cup debut.
NRL halfback Sam Walker made his return to the field, after nine months on the sideline flowing an ACL rupture, and he made a successful return getting through a full half of football before being replaced at half time (as scheduled) by S.G. Ball Cup halfback Toby Rodwell.
The Roosters had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half but failed to make the most of it and trailed 4-0 at half time, making their hopes of victory virtually impossible. They were behind 22-0 entering the final quarter and did put on three late tries to make the scoreline respectable. Once again left winger Tom Rodwell crossed for a try taking his season tally to fourteen tries from thirteen games. He was again very strong in all aspects of his game. Right centre Ben Johnson and hooker Tyler Moriaty were also very effective for the Roosters.
The 7th placed Roosters travel to Newcastle next Saturday to play the 12th placed Knights in the second match of a triple header in the Hunter, with a kick off at 3.05 pm.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have gone down narrowly to Parramatta in their Round 14 clash at Kellyville.
Although scoring seven tries, the Roosters were beaten 44-36 after leading 30-28 inside the final twenty minutes of the match when running with the aid of a very strong wind. The Roosters fielded eight players from their premiership winning S.G. Ball team and played a highly entertaining brand of rugby league but didn’t quite take advantage of the wind in the second half, particularly after they had taken the lead. The Eels led 28-14 at half time but the Roosters scored three tries in six minutes early in the second half to erase that Eels advantage. However, the Roosters turned the ball over constantly in the final twenty minutes to hand the Eels the territory and possession required to post a victory for the home team.
For the Roosters, Will Malloy, who started the game at right centre but switched to left wing, scored four tries, taking his season tally to eight (from thirteen games), whilst left winger Kade Maguire also scored, his fourteenth try of the season (from thirteen games). In attack the Roosters had many impressive contributors including Malloy, fullback Jackson Stewart, second rower Josiah Fesolai, five eighth Josh Durkin and prop Phillip Lavakeiaho. With so many young players in the team they can only improve over the coming weeks.
The 11th placed Roosters travel to Newcastle next Saturday to play the 10th placed Knights in the first match of a triple header in the Hunter, with a kick off at 1.15 pm.
