Clean sweep for the Roosters senior rep and affiliate teams.

NSW Cup

The Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team have taken their record to seven wins and seven losses with a comprehensive 28-6 victory over Newcastle in Newcastle in their Round 15 clash.

The Roosters went into the game missing many regulars due to the NRL team calling on a number of NSW Cup players to replace their Origin representatives, whilst a significant positional change saw captain and regular five eighth Jake Elliott moved to hooker for the first 18 minutes and lock forward for the final 62.

The Roosters ran into the wind in the first half and posted two tries, one to left winger Tom Rodwell (his 15th in 14 games) and the other to left centre Owen Flaherty, off a lovely cross field kick from halfback Chad Townsend, to lead 10-6 at the break.

With the benefit of the wind in the second half the Roosters were rarely in danger of defeat, running in three second half tries, including a double to five eighth Reece Foley and another to right centre Ben Johnson.

There were a number of outstanding contributors for the Roosters but none better than fullback Ethan King, who ran for 248 metres from 24 carries with 9 tackle breaks. Trey Peni, playing on the Roosters right wing, ran for 216 metres from 23 carries with 10 tackle breaks in a very solid display, whilst back rower Hayden Barton made 41 tackles, hooker Tyler Moriaty 39 tackles (playing 62 minutes) and Jake Elliott 36 tackles.

The Roosters have now moved to 6th on the competition table and have the bye next round. Their next match is on the 28th June when they’ll play the 8th placed Magpies at Lidcombe Oval on a weekend in which the NRL team has a bye.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team have returned to the winners list with a 30-28 victory over Newcastle in Newcastle in their Round 15 match.

The Roosters had the benefit of a strong wind in the first half but failed to take advantage and trailed 16-0 at the break and appeared headed for a sizeable defeat. A try to back rower Jackson Pennell early in the second half gave the Roosters a sniff of a comeback but the Knights replied with a try of their own soon after to lead 22-6 with 32 minutes remaining.

Despite running into the wind, the Roosters started to string multiple plays together and ran in four tries in 18 minutes to take a most unexpected 30-22 lead with ten minutes remaining. It was quite the contrast from the first half. Roosters second half tries were scored by hooker Zac Gillett, who spent the first 25 minutes on the bench, bench forward Kynan Toevai and a double to Will Malloy, taking his season tally to 10 tries from 14 games.

A very late Knights converted try left the final score as 30-22 to the Roosters. Gillett was outstanding for the visitors whilst five eighth Josh Durkin was again in fine form.

The Roosters next travel to Fiji to take on the 14th placed Silktails.

NSW Women’s Premiership

Ron Massey Cup

The Glebe Ron Massey Cup team have moved into 4th place on the competition table with a 34-6 victory over the Hills Bulls at Baulkham Hills in their Round 11 match.

The Dirty Reds used two Roosters NSW Cup squad members (winger Turoa Williams and prop Lafi Tuinauvai) and Jersey Flegg Cup squad centre James Khoo, running in six tries to one. Williams and Khoo were both try scorers.

The match was halted after 57 minutes with Glebe leading 34-6 when a major storm hit, forcing the players from the field. The players didn’t return after that with the match abandoned but Glebe declared the winners.

Glebe travel to Wentworthville next Sunday to play the 5th placed Magpies.

Sydney Shield

The Glebe Sydney Shield team have posted their third successive win, defeating the 2nd placed Hills Bulls 26-12 in their Round 11 clash at Baulkham Hills.

Glebe fielded four Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members (winger Brooklyn Taumata, centre Jonti Morshead-Feidel, halfback Bo Piesley and hooker Jacob Tinsley) and led 18-6 at half time. Tinsley was one Glebe’s first half try scorers.

Both teams scored one try each in the second stanza for the Dirty Reds to run out 26-12 victors.

Glebe remains in 6th spot on the ladder but are on equal points now with the 4th placed St Marys. Next Sunday the Dirty Reds travel to Wentworthville to take on the competition leading Magpies.
