The Roosters N.S.W. Cup team have conceded three late converted tries to go down 36-24 to the North Sydney Bears in the NSWRL’s Magic Round.

NSW Cup

The 3rd placed Sydney Roosters have been unable to withstand a late North Syndey flourish, going down 36-24 to 2nd placed North Sydney Bears during the NSWRL’s Magic Round at North Sydney Oval, after the Bears led 18-12 at half time.

The Roosters went into the match without Egan Butcher, Cody Ramsay, Junior Pauga, Reece Foley and Benaiah Ioelu (all on NRL duty in Brisbane) as well as the injured trio of Tommy Talau (calf), Ben Johnson (knee) and Hayden Barton (shoulder). Left winger Trey Peni was recalled for his first match of the season, whilst dual S.G. Ball Cup winning prop Itula Seve returned from a one match suspension to play his first N.S.W. Cup game of 2026.

Eight of the Roosters seventeen that took the field were current or former Roosters Junior Academy players.

North Sydney took very little time breaking down the Roosters defence, opening the scoring in the 2nd minute through their right centre Ammaron Gudgeon, down the Roosters left edge. The Kieran Hayman sideline conversion saw the Bears lead 6-0. They had a second try, within the first fifteen minutes, this time down North’s left side, after Bears fullback Jake Toby put left centre Hayman through a yawning gap before Hayman found halfback (and former Rooster) Tom Steadman in support and the Bears lead was now 12-0.

The Roosters got on the board for the first time in the 26th minute, when a bomb from halfback Toby Rodwell, 20 metres out from the Bears tryline, landed right under the goal posts and Roosters left centre Junior Tupou leapt well above all others to score under the posts. With the Toby Rodwell conversion, the Bears lead was cut back to 12-6.

Minutes before halftime a grubber kick from interchange hooker Jaxson Allen found the in-goal area, and Roosters right edge forward Max McCathie was there to claim the try. The Rodwell conversion left the score locked at 12-12, which looked set to be the half time score.

However, in the last set of the first half, Bears interchange hooker Josh Cook burst through the Roosters defence and found support from interchange forward Matthew French, who scored close enough to the posts for Hayman to easily convert and it was the Bears who took an 18-12 lead into the break,

10 minutes into the second half Roosters interchange prop Kanaan Magele scored near the posts after forward Aston Warwick, now playing in the middle, after starting the match on the left edge, got away a lovey flick pass near the line after half Toby Rodwell dropped off to Warwick on the inside. The conversion from Rodwell once again levelled the scores at 18-18.

23 minutes from fulltime the Roosters took the lead for the first time in the game when Toby Rodwell scored a smart dummy and run try, which he converted to give the Roosters a 24-18 lead.

The flow of possession, soon after, was trending significantly towards the Bears and a combination of their superior field and possession dominance and Roosters errors saw North Sydney run in three tries in the final 15 minutes to go from 24-18 behind to 36-24 in front, and winners on the day. It was a disappointing final stanza by the Roosters but full marks to the Bears, who played some very good football and play in the NSW Cup without access to any fulltime NRL professionals in 2026 after ending their affiliation with the Melbourne Storm.

For the Roosters prop Taylor Losalu played 67 minutes, with 18 runs for 158 metres and 22 tackles. Young fullback Rex Bassingtwaighte ran for 178 metres whilst right edge forward Max McCathie (37 tackles) and interchange hooker Jaxson Allen (28 tackles) had strong defensive performances.

The Roosters drop to 4th place on the ladder after that loss, ahead of their Round 12 bye weekend.
