The Sydney Roosters have lost a third successive NSW Cup match, going down 33-28 to the North Sydney Bears in an extraordinary game of rugby league.
NSW Cup
The 6th placed Sydney Roosters have been beaten 33-28, in bizarre circumstances, by the 2nd placed North Sydney Bears, at Wentworth Park, after the Bears led 21-4 at half time.
The Roosters were missing Blake Steep (knee), Ben Johnson (knee) and Cody Ramsey (illness) but welcomed back Egan Butcher (NRL duty) and Tommy Tala (calf) to the team for the first time since Round 8.
The Roosters got off to a very slow start and had fallen 10-0 behind within the first 10 minutes, after a double to Bears left winger Harry McKeon, a former Rooster. However, the Roosters did strike back and it was right winger Tom Rodwell who posted the Roosters first points of the day with a try in the 22nd minute, after some nice lead up work by halfback Toby Rodwell and fullback Owen Flaherty. Toby Rodwell’s sideline conversion hit the posts and was missed. It was Tom Rodwell’s eighth try of the season.
The Bears regained momentum soon after that opening Roosters try, posting more tries in the 28th and 36th minutes, and when their five eighth Thomas Steadman (another former Rooster) slotted a field goal in the last minute of the first half, the Bears led, by a very handy, 21-4 at the break.
Early in the second half Bears right centre Ammaron Gudgeon found a big hole in the Roosters defence, off a set move, and with his try converted the Bears led 27-4 after 47 minutes. The match was seemingly out of the Roosters reach with a 23 point deficit and the team down on confidence and field position.
However, a much-needed penalty to the Roosters 30 metres out from their own line, in the 52nd minute, seemed to spark something in the Roosters that had been missing for most of the game.
Halfback Toby Rodwell, with a nice dummy and run to score under the posts, set up a period of Roosters dominance where they scored four converted tries in 13 minutes. After Rodwell’s individual effort, prop Kanaan Magele took multiple defenders over the line with him to score next to the posts before a long Junior Tupou line break enabled a quick play the ball and a blind side try to fullback Flaherty in the left corner. The sideline conversion saw the Roosters draw within five points of the Bears, with North Sydney now leading just 27-22.
The Roosters took the lead in the 66th minute when a Toby Rodwell fifth tackle bomb was spilled by Harry McKeon and Egan Butcher, playing at right centre, pounced on the ball to score close enough to the posts for Rodwell to convert, and give the Roosters an extraordinary 28-27 lead. The Roosters had 14 minutes to hang on to the lead and post an improbable win or score again to put the lead out of Norths’ reach.
Unfortunately, with little time on the clock, a brilliant 40/20 from Norths five eighth Harradyn Wilson gave the Bears the ball and field position to mount a final attack on the Roosters line. After being unable to breach the Roosters defence in the first set after the 40/20, Bears five eighth Thomas Steadman took a shot for a second one-pointer of the day, attempting to secure a draw for North Sydney. Roosters hooker Benaiah Ioelu bravely attempted to charge down the field goal shot, and as a result it hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play, but straight into the arms of Norths lock Coby Thomas. With Ioelu getting a touch to the ball in flight, Thomas was deemed onside, despite having played the ball, and he just had to fall over the line to score. The conversion gave the Bears a 33-28 victory and a most unlucky loss to the home team. A superb comeback by the Roosters was eventually nullified by a most unusual winning try. Once again the Roosters poor completion rate of 72% was a major factor in the final result.
A number of the Roosters back five had impressive running metres stats; Owen Flaherty (169 metres), Tommy Talau (143), Junior Tupou (138) and Tom Rodwell (128). The forwards were led by Taylor Losalu (144 metres), followed by Jaxson Rahme (126), Max McCathie (117) and Kanaan Magele (100).
Defensively, captain McCathie led the stats with 33 tackles, followed by Hayden Barton (30), Benaiah Ioelu (27) and Kanaan Magele (25).
With that loss the Roosters remain in 6th place on the ladder, ahead of next Sunday’s clash with the 11th placed Western Suburbs Magpies at Lidcombe Oval next Sunday.
Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)
The 12th placed Sydney Roosters have suffered a third successive loss, going down 18-12 to the 14th placed Kaiviti Silktails in Fiji on Saturday, after the Roosters led 12-6 at half time.
The Roosters went into the match without a number of injured players, such as Aholoka Toia (knee), Lachlan Dooner (shoulder) to name just two, plus those Jersey Flegg Cup eligible players who are currently playing in the NSW Cup.
The team fielded on Saturday included nine players from the 2026 S.G. Ball Cup premiership team, six of whom were also members of the 2025 premiership team, and a further three members of the 2025 premiership team that were too old to play S.G. Ball Cup this season.
This Round 14 fixture was anything but a classic encounter. Both teams struggled to hold onto the ball in warm and humid conditions but the Silktails did enough in the end to post their third win of the season.
The Roosters opened the scoring in the 7th minute when 18 year old halfback Carter Mareko sliced through the Silktails defensive line to score near the posts. With Mareko converting his own try the Roosters led 6-0.
The Silktails equalled the scoring in the 27th minutes and that 6-6 scoreline looked set to be the half time score until Roosters five eighth Jake Elliott put his stamp on the match by putting in a very clever chip kick near the Silktails tryline, which he regathered to score. With the Mareko conversion, the Roosters led 12-6 at half time.
Early in the second half Roosters fullback and captain Zac Sarfati was carried from the field with what looked to be a serious knee injury. It was disruptive for the Roosters, although in Kiwi centre Jackson Stewart they had a very capable replacement.
However, with the Roosters still leading 12-6 with time ticking away and neither side looking likely to score, a Carter Mareko clearing kick was charged down by Silktails hooker Seru Kalounivalu and the match changed dramatically. Kalounivalu broke into the back field but was chased down by Stewart. The referee deemed that Jackson held down the Silktails hooker too long and sent him to the sin bin for ten minutes.
With the Roosters down to 12 men, the Silktails quickly ran in two converted tries and wrapped up the game in the process, condemning the Roosters to their ninth loss of the season. It was a disappointing defeat for the visitors, despite the difficult conditions and the youthfulness of their line-up.
With that loss the Roosters drop to 13th on the ladder ahead of their Round 15 clash against the 2nd placed Wests Tigers at Lidcombe Oval next Sunday morning.
NSW Women’s Premiership
The competition for the Central Coast Roosters commences next Sunday when they’ll play the Wests Tigers in a Round One clash at Lidcombe Oval.
Ron Massey Cup
The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have been beaten 38-30 by 10th placed Manly Leagues in their postponed Round 9 clash at Frenchs Forest on Friday, after Manly led 22-10 at half time. It was Manly’s first win of the season and Glebe’s sixth successive loss.
Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Will Malloy (centre) and Michael Coleman (bench hooker) both suited up for Glebe.
It was a match that could have gone either way, Manly only wrapped up the game in the 78th minute of the match when their lock Kylan Mafoa scored Manly’s seventh try, after the Dirty Reds couldn’t complete a set immediately following the scoring of their fifth. That basic error was one of many for Glebe on Friday, a number of which were very costly.
Despite the loss, the Dirty Reds remain in 9th place on the ladder, ahead of their Round 10 clash with 5th placed Penrith Brothers at Penrith next Saturday,
Sydney Shield
The Sydney Shield competition was not played over the King’s Birthday weekend. The Dirty Reds, who are 7th on the ladder, next play Penrith Brothers at Penrith next Saturday.
