For a second successive week, the Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup team, missing a plethora of players, have pulled off a major upset, this time defeating 5th Placed Cronulla-Sutherland.

NSW Cup

The 11th placed Sydney Roosters have suffered a fifth successive loss with a 30-12 defeat at the hands of the 5th placed Newtown Jets at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday, after the Jets led 20-0 at half time.

Once again, the Roosters had a large number of players unavailable with injuries to Blake Steep, Lachlan Dooner, Cody Ramsay, Ben Johnson and Reece Foley and NRL call ups for Tommy Talau, Egan Butcher, Rex Bassingthwaighte and Toby Rodwell, leaving the Roosters backline, in particular, well down on troops. 18-year-old local centre Brooklyn Heath and 20-year-old Kiwi fullback Jackson Stewart made their NSW Cup debuts for the Roosters.

With regular halves Toby Rodwell and Reece Foley missing, for a second successive week, Jake Elliott and Owen Flaherty were paired in the halves for the Newtown clash. Not unexpectedly, the Roosters struggled in attack and scored their only two tries in the final five minutes of the match, to hooker Benaiah Ioelu and left edge forward Hayden Barton. However, after conceding 197 points in the previous four games, the Roosters defence had a lot more steel to it this week, particularly given that Newtown had 55% of possession. The Roosters did, though, concede six tries, but in some small consolation they were able to win the second half 12-10. Again, Captian Max McCathie topped the tackle count, with 51, with no misses.

Despite the loss the Roosters remain in 11th place on the ladder ahead of their Round 17 clash with the 4th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Wentworth Park next Sunday.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 12th placed Sydney Roosters have posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season, with a surprise 22-18 win over the 5th placed Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Roosters led 18-4 at half time.

The Roosters went into the match without Itula Seve, Aholola Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Zac Sarfati, Enzo Griffier, Jackson De Lisle, Reece Foley and Jackson Pennell, who are all part of a significant Flegg Cup injury list. Further, Darcy Smith, Eddy Cayless, James Finegan and Carter Mareko, who played Under 19s State of Origin last Thursday, did not back up, whilst Flegg Cup eligible players Rex Bassingthwaighte, Toby Rodwell, Jake Elliott, Jaxson Allen, Charleston Te Rore, Jackson Stewart, Brooklyn Heath and Kanaan Magele are currently playing in higher grades.

17-year-old The Entrance Tigers junior Zaylen Ekapati made his Jersey Flegg Cup debut at fullback.

Despite the number of absentees, the Roosters once again pulled off a major upset, much like their shock 26-18 victory over the Wests Tigers a week earlier.

The Roosters scored their first try in just the 2nd minute of the match when halfback Bo Peisley went through a yawning gap, close to the Sharks line, off a lovely pass from prop Peter Benjamin Uini. The Sharks hit back soon after when their halfback Bryce Sait scored, but with the Roosters, through winger E.J. Mahu-Delamere, converting their first try, and the Sharks failing to do so, the Roosters led 6-4 after 6 minutes.

The Roosters stretched their lead to 12-4 when five eighth Keone Anitelea-Tsioussis penetrated the Sharks defence and got a super pass away for lock Josiah Fesolai to score under the posts in the 16th minute. Minutes later the Roosters led 18-4 when Anitelea-Tsioussis found an unmarked Kade Maguire on the left wing. Maguire broke into the backfield and found Ekapati in support and the Roosters were now well on top, taking that 18-4 lead into half time.

The Roosters opened the scoring in the second half when Ekapati crossed for his second try in the 46th minute. The conversion attempt from Mahu-Delamere was unsuccessful but the Roosters lead was now 22-4, but the Sharks weren’t going away and tries to left centre Prestyn Laine-Sietu in the 53rd minute, interchange hooker Jai Camilleri in the 56th minute, which was converted, and right winger Richard Whaelbone in the 62nd minute, meant the Roosters lead was now only four, leading 22-18 entering the final 20 minutes of play. Since Ekapati’s 46th minute try the Roosters had hardly touched the ball for ten minutes, and when they had it, they were unable to complete a set.

The Roosters eventually got back into a set-to-set contest with the Sharks and the next period of play was dominated by defence. The Sharks had the better of field position for most of that final 20 minutes and was able to put up bomb after bomb to Ekapati at the back but the youngster, weighing just 77kg, never looked likely to drop one. The Roosters had just two sets in the Sharks quarter in that period but weren’t able to score and in the final minutes of play, the Sharks spread the ball to their right and found space around the Roosters defence. Richard Whalebone, the Sharks right winger, charged toward the Roosters line on the last tackle, only to be cut down by Ekapati, as the last line of defence, to cap off a memorable debut and ensure the Roosters held on for the win.

It's hard to overstate how extraordinary these last two wins have been for the Roosters with so many quality players unavailable. The young squad have played with great heart.

With that win, the Roosters have risen to 11th on the ladder, ahead of their Round 17 clash with the 7th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Wentworth Park next Sunday.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 7th placed Central Coast Roosters remain undefeated, through two rounds of this season’s premiership, with a 30-16 victory over 5th Parramatta at Tuggerah on Saturday, after the Roosters led 20-6 at half time.

With a large number of NRLW squad members involved in an NRL trial against the Sharks and the Under 19s State of Origin match played just two days earlier, the Central Coast Roosters were unable to field any NRLW squad members this week. Despite this, a competitive team was fielded and a decisive win was achieved.

The Roosters began well posting two early tries. The first to rampaging prop Felila Fakalelu, after a good surge from hooker Kyana Patten in the 3rd minute, and the second try to left centre Majayda Darcy in the 12th minute, off a lovely pass from five eighth Aylah McCullogh, who was popping up on both sides of the field. Halfback Meg Mcphail converted the second try for the Roosters to lead 10-0.

The Eels struck back after 19 minutes with a converted try to Teagan Long before the Roosters replied with two more first half tries. Left winger Jordan Guest crossed in the 26th minute and when Felila Fakalelu scored her second try of the day, under the posts, in the dying minutes of the half, the Roosters had a very handy 20-6 half time lead.

Second half tries to interchange forward Zoe Coyne near the posts in the 49th minute, and a second to Jordan Guest in the left corner in the 59th minute gave the Roosters a commanding 30-6 lead with ten minutes remaining. The Eels did pick up two late consolation tries but it was a comprehensive victory to a Roosters side that will only get stronger as the season progresses.

With that win the Roosters move up to 4th on the ladder ahead of their Round 3 clash with 12th placed Wentworthville at Woy Woy next Sunday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe have suffered their 8th successive loss of the season with a 22-20 defeat at the hands of the 8th placed Hills Bulls at St Marys on Saturday, after the Bulls led 12-8 at half time.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Emery Jolliffe (left wing), Will Malloy (left centre), Rhys Dakin (prop) and Michael Coleman (lock) all suited up for Glebe.

Against the Bulls the Dirty Reds led 20-12 with less than 20 minutes remaining but the Bulls were able to cross twice in the final quarter of the game to claim a narrow two point win.

In five of the eight consecutive losses the Dirty Reds have had, they have either led at half time or been within four points of the lead at the break. The last four losses have been by eight points or less. It’s been a frustrating period for the 2024 Premiers.

Despite the defeat the Dirty Reds remain in 9th place on the ladder ahead of their Round 12 clash with 8th placed Blacktown next Sunday at Blacktown.

Sydney Shield

The 8th placed Glebe have dropped their fourth successive match after going down 32-26 to the 7th placed Hills Bulls at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after Glebe led 14-12 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Micah Leaupepe-Perkins (left wing), Ryder Williams (halfback) and Jacob Tinsley (lock) all turned out for Glebe.

The match was in the balance throughout but in a crucial ten minutes of the match, to commence the second half, with Glebe leading 14-12 and Hills Bulls winger Maile Li in the sin bin, it was the away team, with 12 men, who scored two critical converted tries to take the lead 24-14 when Li returned to the field. That period secured the Bulls an eventual six try to four victory.

Despite the loss Glebe remain in 8th place on the ladder, ahead of their Round 12 clash with 4th placed Blacktown next Sunday at Blacktown.
