After five successive losses, the Sydney Roosters NSW Cup team are back amongst the winners with a come from behind victory over the 4th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs.

NSW Cup

The 11th placed Sydney Roosters have beaten the 4th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs 20-14 at Scully Park, Tamworth on Saturday, as part of Regional Magic Round in the NSW Cup, after the Rabbitohs led 10-6 at half time. It was the Roosters first win since they beat the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs back in Round 10.

With Tommy Talau, Rex Bassingthwaighte, Egan Butcher and Benaiah Ioelu on NRL duty in Brisbane and Junior Pauga (ribs), Blake Steep (knee), Ben Johnson (knee), Tom Rodwell (hamstring), Cody Ramsay (shoulder) and Lachlan Dooner (shoulder) on the injured list, the NSW Cup team was again missing a significant number of players for their Magic Round clash. However, the team did welcome back halves Toby Rodwell and Reece Foley, for the first time since Round 14.

18-year-old lock forward Eddy Cayless, son of former Roosters Assistant Coach, Nathan, and nephew of 2002 Premiership winner, Jason, made his NSW Cup debut for the Club. Cayless was one of nine Roosters players who were still of Jersey Flegg Cup age playing for the Roosters, and one of three who played S.G. Ball Cup earlier this year for the club.

The Roosters began the game in style, with young Kiwi winger Jackson Stewart scoring in the 2nd minute after some lovely lead up work inside from halves Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, fullback Owen Flaherty, left edge Hayden Barton and left centre Aston Warwick.

The Rabbitohs then took control of the game with a brace of tries to their left winger Jordi Mazzone in the 8th and 18th minute, and apart from one long break from Roosters right edge Max McCathie it was Souths that dominated field position and possession for the bulk of the first half. Even when Souths went down to 12 men, with the sin binning of fullback Matt Dufty in the 31st minute, the Roosters weren’t able to capitalise on having the extra man.

However, when Dufty was sent to the sin bin for the second time in the match in the 50th minute, the Roosters did strike back. Commencing 70 metres out from the Souths line, halfback Toby Rodwell threw a dummy and burst through a number of tackles before finding speedy bench hooker Jaxson Allen in support. Allen got to within 25 metres of the Rabbitohs line before he needed support and Rodwell was there to take the pass and then beat more Souths defenders in a dash to the line and score one of the Roosters best tries of the season. The Rodwell conversion from wide out gave the Roosters a 12-10 lead.

With 9 minutes remaining and the match still in the balance at 12-10, the Roosters again attacked from inside their own half, this time from 60 metres out, when Toby Rodwell went down a narrow blind side and found room for captain Max McCathie, at right edge, to burst into the backfield and dummy his way to the line in a 55 metre dash. The Rodwell conversion took the Roosters lead out to 18-10 and the Roosters looked home.

However, an errant six tackle kick was caught in the in-goal area on the full and from the ensuing seven tackle set Souths half Jonah Glover would cross over to narrow the score to 18-14. The Roosters handled the final five minutes well, giving Souths little chance to score again and wrapped up the game with a penalty goal just before full time, to win 20-14.

Having conceded an average of 45.4 points in their last five matches, the Roosters conceded just 14 against the Rabbitohs in a much-needed victory. The star of the game was halfback Toby Rodwell, with a try, a try assist, three line break assists and three tackle breaks. He also kicked four from four and ran for 183 metres.

Mention must also be made of the contributions of Max McCathie, who ran for 226 metres and Hayden Barton who made 44 tackles in 68 minutes.

With that win the Roosters rise to 10th on the competition table, ahead of their Round 18 bye.

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 11th placed Sydney Roosters have been defeated 24-12 by 7th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Rabbithos led 12-8 at half time.

With Flegg Cup eligible players Rex Bassingthwaighte, Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Jake Elliott, Darcy Smith, Jackson Stewart, Kanaan Magele, Jaxson Allen, Brooklyn Heath and Eddy Cayless playing in higher grades this weekend, and Itula Seve, Aholola Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Zac Sarfati, Enzo Griffier, Lui Lee, Jackson De Lisle and Jackson Pennell amongst the Flegg Cup eligible players in the casualty ward, the Roosters were again forced to field a well below full strength team on Sunday, as they chased a third successive win against the odds.

Unfortunately, the Roosters fell just short of a third successive win, outscored four tries to three by the Rabbitohs.

Souths got off to the perfect start, leading 12-0 after 18 minutes and well in control of the game. However, the Roosters struck back late in the first half with a try double to right winger John-Paul Donevski. The Roosters goal kicking problems of the last few weeks continued to plague them and fullback E.J. Mahu-Delamere failed to convert both tries.

With Roosters interchange hooker Kalen Cashin in the sin bin, Souths crossed for tries in the 48th and 58th minute to stretch their lead to 24-8 and wrap up the game. An unconverted try to Roosters left centre Dom Farrugia seven minutes from full time completed the scoring for the day, and a courageous Roosters team were defeated.

With that the loss the Roosters drop to 12th on the competition table, ahead of their Round 18 bye.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 4th placed Central Coast Roosters remain undefeated in 2026 after a comfortable 50-10 win over 12th placed Wentworthville at Woy Woy on Sunday, after the Roosters led 20-0 at half time.

NRLW squad members Logan Fletcher (fullback), Mia Vaotuua (right centre), Talea Tonga (five eighth), Tatum Bird (hooker), Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Taneisha Gray (right edge), Nikiah Campbell (left edge) and Anastasia Leatupue (bench) were all in action for the Roosters on Sunday, necessitating a large number of changes from the side that beat the Parramatta Eels in Round 2.

The Roosters ran in ten tries in the 70 minutes, including six in the second half, and five in the final 20 minutes, as they completely dominated this Round 3 clash. Captain and left winger Sharni Waters crossed for four tries, whilst right winger Manisha Seebeck crossed for a double. Roosters five eighth Talea Tonga had four try assists and scored one try of her own in a player of the match performance. Right centre Mia Vaotuua, with two try assists and one try of her own, had a very strong second half. It was a very classy win from the Roosters, who can even get stronger with the likelihood of the injection of more NRLW talent in the coming weeks.

Despite the win the Roosters remain in 4th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 4 clash with the 8th placed St George Dragons at Woy Woy next Sunday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have suffered their ninth successive loss, going down 40-10 to 8th placed Blacktown on Sunday, after Blacktown led 16-6 at half time.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Rhys Dakin (prop) and Michael Coleman (hooker), Jersey Flegg Cup squad member Micah Leaupepe-Perkins (left wing off the interchange bench) and former Roosters NRL stars Kane Evans (prop) and Brad Takarangi (five eighth) all suited up for Glebe.

As has been the case in a number of Glebe’s losses in this nine match sequence the Dirty Reds were well in the game after 50 minutes, behind only 16-10. However, Blacktown ran in four tries in the last thirty minutes to cruise to a 40-10 victory.

Despite that loss Glebe remain in 9th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 13 clash with competition leaders St Marys at Wentworth Park next Sunday.

Sydney Shield

The 8th placed Glebe Dirty Reds are back in the winners list with a 32-24 victory over 4th placed Blacktown Workers at Blacktown on Sunday, after Glebe led 10-6 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Ryder Williams (halfback) and Jacob Tinsley (hooker) both turned out for Glebe.

Having lost its pervious four matches, Glebe went though some anxious moments before claiming its first victory since early May, ironically also against Blacktown. After leading 28-12 with less than 20 minutes to go, Glebe were well on top but the Workers struck back with converted tries in the 64th and 73rd minutes to get within four of Glebe. A third second half try in the 79th minute to halfback Ryder Williams finally put the match to bed. Williams, a former Gold Coast Titans Top 30 squad member, was the star of the game, with four goals to go alongside his three tries.

With that win Glebe rise to 7th on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 13 clash with competition leaders St Marys at Wentworth Park next Sunday.
