After losing by 60-6 to the Melbourne Storm just seven weeks ago, the Sydney Roosters NSW Cup have reversed that result in style, defeating the Storm, in Sydney, 27-18 in their Round 20 clash.

NSW Cup

The 9th placed Sydney Roosters have posted back-to-back wins with a 27-18 defeat of 13th placed Melbourne Storm at Allianz Stadium on Friday, after the Roosters led 12-6 at half time. Seven weeks earlier, in Round 13, the Storm beat the Roosters 60-6.

The club went into the match missing Blake Steep (knee), Kanaan Magele (shoulder), Ben Johnson (knee) and Dietrich Roache (leg) with injury, whilst Rex Bassingthwaighte, Tommy Talau, Taylor Losalu, Cody Ramsay and Egan Butcher were all on NRL duty. Tom Rodwell (hamstring) returned to the team after being absent since Round 15, whilst Itula Seve (knee) was also back from injury, having not played since June 6.

The Storm opened up the scoring through their five eighth Hayden Watson, after a spilled bomb landed in the in-goal area for a simple put down, and with the conversion the Storm led 6-0. First Rooster to score was prop Aston Warwick who outjumped Storm fullback Hugo Peel, off a Toby Rodwell bomb, to score under the posts. The Rodwell conversion tied the scores up at 6-6.

The second Roosters try came after 27 minutes when the Roosters, through halfback Toby Rodwell and fullback Owen Flaherty, went down the blind side 60 metres out and found space for the very speedy right centre Brooklyn Heath, who raced away to score wide out. It was the fourth try this season for the 18-year-old in just his fourth game. The conversion from Rodwell was successful and the Roosters led 12-6, a lead they took into half time.

In the early minutes of the second half prop Aston Warwick somehow ended up with the ball on the final tackle of the set, and grubbered the ball deep into the in-goal area. The Storm were willing the ball over the dead ball line but Warwick never gave up and dived on the ball just before it left the in-goal area. After the conversion the Roosters lead was extended to 18-6.

The next twenty minutes were poor from the Roosters, with and three penalties and two set restarts conceded on top of three errors committed with the ball. Unsurprisingly, the possession and field position the Storm enjoyed from this led to two converted Storm tries in the 54th and 59th minutes, to Storm edge forward Angus Hinchley, to tie the scores up at 18-18.

The Roosters were desperately hanging on but not looking likely to score. However, after just returning to the field for his second stint in the 70th minute, hooker Benaiah Ioelu threw a big dummy from dummy half that deceived the Storm defence and he got to the line virtually untouched. The conversion gave the Roosters a 24-18 lead. A 76th minute field goal and a 79th minute penalty goal to Toby Rodwell saw the final score at 27-18 and the Roosters remain well in the hunt for a finals berth.

With that win the Roosters rise to 8th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 21 clash with the 2nd placed Newcastle Knights next Friday at Newcastle. The match is a curtain raiser to the NRL clash between the same two sides, and with the likely return of players to the Roosters NRL side on Friday, the NSW Cup side can be expected to be strengthened for this next game as a consequence.

The Roosters now sit one point from fifth spot but equal with three other teams in that position. Seven teams are fighting for the final two spots in the five, all separated by just two competition points

Jersey Flegg Cup (Men’s Under 21s)

The 11th placed Sydney Roosters have made it four wins from their last five games with a 32-24 victory over 10th placed Melbourne Storm at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after the Roosters led 24-6 at half time.

The Roosters were again missing a number of players, with a significant injury list headed up by headed by Aholoka Toia, Lachlan Dooner, Lui Lee, Zac Sarfati, Jackson Pennell, Jackson De Lisle and Enzo Griffier and players such as Toby Rodwell, Reece Foley, Jake Elliott, Jackson Stewart, Kanaan Magele, Brooklyn Heath, Rex Bassingthwaighte and Charleston Te Rore playing in higher grades currently. Fullback Taj Jordan, who joined the Roosters from Orange in 2024, was handed a Jersey Flegg Cup debut. He is the sixth fullback used by the Roosters in 2026.

Continuing their good recent form, the Roosters raced out to a 24-0 lead inside the first 35 minutes, through four tries, all converted by 18-year-old halfback Carter Mareko. Mareko was first to score, after just two minutes, with his trademark show and go fooling the Storm defence from close range.

Nice line running from another 18-year-old, lock forward Eddy Cayless, led to the Roosters second try in the 21st minute, off a clever pass from bench hooker Jaxson Allen, close to the Storm tryline. Three minutes later Mareko scored his second try, near the posts, after a quick dummy half run and pass from Jaxson Allen.

In the 35th minute the Roosters spread the ball, 50 metres out from the Storm line, to the left giving exciting edge forward Darcy Smith the space to break the defensive line and charge into the back field where he found support inside from left winger Kade Maguire to score under the posts.

The Roosters appeared to be charging toward a big win, but the Roosters faltered and the Strom ran in converted tries in the 39th, 45th and 55th minutes. The Roosters countered with a penalty goal in the 66th minute but when the Storm scored again in the 74th minute the Roosters lead was now just two, 26-24.

The Roosters were in grave danger of blowing a 24-0 lead. However, the Roosters, in one of their rare second half sets near the Storm line, put up a perfectly placed bomb to the right corner, from five eighth Ryder Williams, which right centre John-Paul Donevski took well above his head to score the match clinching try. Mareko’s sixth goal from six attempts gave the Roosters a 32-24 win. Mareko finished the game with 20 points.

With that win the Roosters rise in 10th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 21 clash with the 11th placed Newcastle at Newcastle next Saturday.

NSW Women’s Premiership

The 5th placed Central Coast Roosters have been beaten for the first time this season, going down 14-10 to 7th placed Mounties at Bateau Bay on Saturday, after scores were locked at 6-6 at half time.

The Roosters team featured NRLW squad members Aliyah Nasio (lock forward), Nikiah Campbell (right edge), Talea Tonga (halfback), Tatum Bird (hooker), Amber Hall (bench), as well as development players Te Raukura Leafe (prop), Mia Vaotu’ua (fullback) and Anastasia Leatupue (right centre). Nasio (suspension) and Hall (calf injury) returned to rugby league for the first time this year, with both players getting through the game unscathed. Vaotu’ua and Leatupue were back in the side following the completion of their Australian Schoolgirls carnival commitments. The team did lose Mia Wood and Taneisha Gray, however, as both were required by the NRLW team, although neither got onto the playing field on Saturday.

Mounties were first to score with a converted try in the 19th minute to right centre Isabella Waterman wide out.

Kiwi international Amber Hall, a three-time NRLW premiership winner, opened the Roosters scoring with a try with her first touch of the game. It was a typical Hall try, taking the ball at close range and proving too strong for the goal line defence. The Tia Cook conversion tied the scores at 6-6, which remained the score into the second half.

When right winger Manisha Seebeck scored in the 47th minute for the Roosters, after nice lead up work by NRLW squad members Talea Tonga, Mia Vaotu’ua and Anastasia Leatupue, the Roosters seemed to be in control of the game, despite Cook missing the conversion and the lead being slender at 10-6.

However, the Roosters final quarter was very disappointing. They struggled to complete sets and gave Mounties plenty of opportunities to get back into the game. Mounties crossed for two second half tries in the 57th and 64th minutes (to hooker Tyla Peliigra and halfback Evie McGrath) after enjoying a glut of good field ball. The Roosters just couldn’t get themselves in a position to pressure the Mounties line and the amount of defence they were forced to do proved too much. It was a game the Central Coast should have won, but for that very poor final quarter.

With that loss the Roosters drop to 6th place on the competition table, ahead of their Round 7 clash with the 4th placed Newcastle at Newcastle next Saturday.

Ron Massey Cup

The 9th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have suffered their 12th successive loss of the season, after going down 26-22 to 3rd placed Mounties at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after Glebe led 16-4 at half time and 22-4 with 32 minutes remaining.

Roosters N.S.W. Cup squad members Emery Jolliffe (left wing), Rhys Dakin (prop) and Michael Coleman (hooker) suited up for Glebe.

It is the sixth time in this twelve-match losing sequence that Glebe have led at half time. It was much the same story as previous matches with the Dirty Reds conceding four tries in the last 32 minutes and unable to score one try themselves in that period.

Despite that loss Glebe remain in 9th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 16 clash with the 4th placed Canterbury-Bankstown at Hammondville next Saturday.

Sydney Shield

The 8th placed Glebe Dirty Reds have lost a third successive match, going down 48-30 to 2nd placed Mounties at Wentworth Park on Sunday, after Mounties led 18-12 at half time.

Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg Cup squad members Dom Farrugia (right centre), Tyrone Hurt-Pickering (five eighth), Jacob Tinsley (hooker) and Kynan Toevai (prop) all turned out for Glebe. Farrugia and Hurt-Pickering were try scorers for Glebe and Farrugia kicked four goals and Hurt-Pickering one.

With that result Glebe remain in 8th place on the competition ladder, ahead of their Round 16 clash with the 9th placed Moorebank Rams at Hammondville next Saturday.
