Sydney Roosters Business Club Launch Building Foundations for Future Success

The Sydney Roosters Business Club Launch at the picturesque ESQUIRE bar in the iconic Queen Victoria Building kicked off an exclusive set of events giving Business Club Members a closer insight into the workings of the Club and partners, with a number of industry leaders joining as guest speakers in what was a resounding success.

Hosted by media presenter Tim Gilbert, guests enjoyed an introduction to the Club by Group CEO Joe Kelly, who shared his career progression from his humble beginnings at the North Sydney Bears during the Super League War, before his passion for sports administration soon found him on the other side of the world managing finances for EPL powerhouse Chelsea F.C before heading the Roosters in 2017.

With the Club's aim to strengthen Members business knowledge, Mr Gilbert was joined on stage by Australian Broadcast Media trio Mark Fennessy AM, Saul Shtein and Luke McIlveen for an in-depth discussion on their careers and the ever-changing Australian sports media landscape.

Mr Shtein shared experiences from producing the Wide World of Sports for Channel Nine, pioneering sports production through the 1990s and joining forces with Mr Fennessy, who currently sits on the Roosters Board of Directors.

Before producing the Olympic Games on Nine, the pair also spoke in-depth of their production of MTV Music Television, in particular 'MTV Unplugged', catapulting a young Darryl Braithwaite to number one across Australia after broadcasting his album 'The Edge'. MTV Unplugged would go on to become a worldwide sensation and a platform for artists such as Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen and Elton John.

After moving to Foxsports, Mr Schtein and Mr McIlveen (Current Executive Editor at Fox Sports) were able to share their thoughts about the continued influence of streaming services and social media over the last decade.

The trio also touched on the importance of networking and maintaining business relationships, citing the massive role their current partnership played during the height of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with Mr Schtein still undertaking business ventures with Mr Fennessy after first meeting in the 1980s.

With a number of Business Club events to be held in the next month, including the Carlton IN Business Lunch and Breakfast With Brad Fittler, there will be future opportunities to engage with the Club, connect with like-minded sports enthusiasts at a business level and foster networking and key learning outcomes.
