In a great weekend for the Roosters, the Club qualified three teams into next Saturday’s grand finals, matching the achievements of 2025 and further emphasising the great work being done within the Roosters pathway programs.

S.G. Ball Cup (Men’s Under 19s)

The Sydney Roosters, who finished 3rd on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with seven wins and one loss, have beaten minor premiers South Sydney 24-14 in Saturday’s preliminary final to advance to a second successive Grand Final, after the Roosters led 12-10 at half time.

The Roosters went into the match without star halfback Carter Mareko, who was serving the first game of a two-match suspension, and lost left centre Lui Lee early in the second half to a hamstring injury. However, the attributes that the team had shown in so many matches through the season came to the fore once again to advance the team to their third grand final of the past five seasons.

With Mareko unavailable for the season, fullback Ross Bassingthwaighte took over the goal kicking, and in the 4th minute of the game Bassingthwaighte opened the scoring in the preliminary final with a penalty goal. However, the Roosters 2-0 lead didn’t last long with Souths five eighth Taj Alvarez diving over from dummy half in the 7th minute to give the Rabbitohs a 4-2 lead.

The Roosters hit back soon after, when fullback Bassingthwaighte beat five Souths defenders to the line in the 11th minute to score near the posts. With the conversion the Roosters led 8-4. After replacement halfback Zaylen Ekapati had a try disallowed for a double movement in the 16th minute, it was the Rabbitohs who were next to score after Alvarez split the Roosters right side defence before linking up with halves partner, and former Central Coast Roosters player, Isaac Fotu-Moala, who scored under the posts in the 24th minute. With the conversion Souths were back in front 10-8.

With half time approaching Roosters five eighth Brok Elliott found a disorganised Souths right side defence and a simple pass to Joshua Fesolai saw the left winger score in the corner. With the sideline conversion missed the Roosters took a 12-10 lead into half time.

The Roosters took a giant leap towards a grand final berth when they were first to score in the second half after Bassingthwaighte, having a stormer of a game, fooled the Souths right side defence sufficiently to position Fesolai with a cut out pass that allowed Fesolai to score his 2nd try of the day and his 9th of the season. A superb sideline conversion from Bassingthwaighte now saw the Roosters ahead 18-10, five minutes into the second half.

With Lee off the field with injury, bench hooker Ryan Tukapua was moved to the unfamiliar position of left centre, but the Roosters defence held solid. Then, after another powerful burst by prop Charleston Te Rore, halfback Ekapati, on the final tackle of the set, dummied to kick and then dashed 25 metres past a number of Souths defenders to score a scintillating try under the posts. With the conversion the Roosters were in front 24-10 and even with 20 minutes to go the Roosters weren’t ever going to lose this final.

Souths did score a late try to fullback Lachlan Walters in the left corner but the Roosters thoroughly deserved their 24-14 win, and in just his second season as coach, Boyd Cordner, and a few of his premiership players from last season (captain Darcy Smith, prop Itula Seve, second rower James Finegan, lock Eddy Cayless and left centre Lui Lee, pending the severity of his hamstring injury) are off to a second successive Grand Final.

The defending premiers will now play 7th placed Newcastle Knights (who beat Manly-Warringah 40-6 in their preliminary final) in the Grand Final next Saturday at Leichhardt Oval. The match kicks off at 3.15 pm. The teams met earlier this season with the Roosters winning comfortably 28-4.

It will be the second time the Roosters and Knights have met in an S.G. Ball Cup Grand Final. In 1997, when ran as an Under 18s competition, the Roosters, featuring players such as Anthony Minichiello, Dean Widders, Mark Riddell, Andrew Lomu, Ronald Prince and Nelson Lomi, beat the Knights 11-10. The Roosters are chasing their 6th S.G. Ball Cup premiership after winning in 1997, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2025.

The Central Coast Roosters season is over. The team, coached by Adam McEwan, finished in 17th place on the competition table, with one win and seven losses.

Harold Matthews Cup (Men’s Under 17s)

The Sydney Roosters, who finished 6th on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with five wins and three losses, have beaten 4th placed Illawarra 36-26 in Saturday’s preliminary final to advance to their first ever Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final, after the Roosters led 20-18 at half time. It was the Roosters third successive sudden death finals victory.

In a match where both teams struggled to defend multiple sets the Roosters scored seven tries to five after the lead changed hands a number of times during the game.

The Roosters were first to score in the 5th minute when right edge forward Tai Skipps found space between Steelers defenders off a nice pass from halfback Charlie Webb. Webb converted but the Roosters conceded the next two tries, both to Steelers left winger Preston Sager and after 14 minutes, Illawarra led 12-6. A few minutes later Roosters lock and captain Marquis Sando scored a simple try near the posts and scores were locked up at 12-12.

In the 20th minute, speedy Roosters fullback Harper Boothroyd scored off a Webb pass out wide and the Roosters were back in front 16-12. Five minutes later Boothroyd busted the Steelers defence and found Skipps in support for the edge back rower to score his second of the day. Although the conversion was missed, the Roosters were in front 20-12 and hoped to take that lead into half time. However, the Roosters defence couldn’t hold out a third try to Preston Sager, who scored in the corner just before the break, and at half time the Roosters lead had been cut to 20-18 after the sideline conversion from Steelers five eighth and captain Asher Chapman was successful.

The second half began very poorly for the Roosters, conceding two tries in the first ten minutes, the first to interchange hooker Kahuitara Te Ra Chase and the second to five eighth Chapman. Fortunately for the Roosters, both tries were unconverted but Illawarra had regained control of the game, and the Roosters were severely under the pump, now behind 26-20, with 20 minutes remaining.

With 15 minutes remaining five eighth Samuel Large found an unmarked Levi Scarlett on his right wing, who scored in the corner. With plenty of pressure on, Charlie Webb nailed the sideline conversion and scores were locked up again at 26-26. With 8 minutes remaining, right centre Andy Toia ran a great line between two Steelers defenders and fullback Boothroyd got him the ball at the perfect time for him to score and the Roosters were back in front 32-26 after the successful conversion.

The Roosters defence, after a number of shaky moments throughout the game, was able to keep the Steelers at bay during a tense final period and in the dying minute of the game the Roosters sealed victory when left winger Amaziah Pritchard scored in the corner off another fine Boothroyd pass, just prior to the final siren being blown.

Just a tremendous performance from the Roosters, with a rookie coach in Paul Momirovski and just two players from their 2025 side backing up this year. One sour note, however, was a lower leg injury to star prop Seu Fidow, who left the field inside the first 15 minutes and didn’t return, putting him in extreme doubt for the Decider.

The Roosters will now play undefeated minor premiers Newcastle Knights (who beat South Sydney 18-10 in their preliminary final) in the Grand Final next Saturday at Leichhardt Oval. The match kicks off at 11.45 am. When the teams met earlier this season the Knights beat the Roosters 20-6.

The Central Coast Roosters season is over. The team, coached by Ryan Southam, finished in 17th place on the competition table, with one win and seven losses.

Tarsha Gale Cup (Women’s Under 19s)

Minor Premiers the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy, who finished the regular season with seven wins and one loss, have been beaten 28-6 by the 2nd placed Parramatta Eels in Sunday’s preliminary final, after the Eels led 16-6 at half time.

The Roosters have struggled to match it with the Eels of late and their surprise loss in Week One of the finals to the Sharks proved very costly as the Roosters ended up on the Eels side of the draw as they attempted to qualify for another Grand Final. Once again, the Eels were too classy and it will be a major surprise if they don’t take the title again this year.

The Eels raced to a 16-0 lead after 14 minutes and whilst the Roosters scored a try just before half time, to interchange forward Lahni Moore to keep in touch with the Eels at the break, it was a short-lived comeback.

Three second half tries to Parramatta blew the score out and the Roosters attempt to qualify for a second straight grand final fell short.

The Grand Final will be held next Saturday at Leichhardt Oval where defending premiers Parramatta will play 4th placed Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The match kicks off at 1.30 pm.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women’s Under 17s)

The Central Coast Roosters, who finished 4th on the competition ladder at the conclusion of the regular season, with six wins and two losses, have beaten the 2nd placed Newcastle Knights 31-16 in Sunday’s preliminary final, after the Roosters led 16-10 at half time, to advance to a second successive grand Final.

It was a major upset given the Knights recent form and great credit to the Roosters and coach Jayme Fressard for how well they played in such a big game.

After conceding the first try of the game inside the first five minutes, the Roosters scored the next three. Left winger Alissa McNair, filling in for Sienna Kennedy-Wilkie, scored the first two, both as a result of fullback and captain Stella Hall’s pace causing confusion amongst the Knights right side defence, and both were converted by lock Lara Murray, the first from the touchline. In the 20th minute five eight Layla Tonga sliced through from short range and the Roosters led 16-4.

With half time approaching, after sustained attack, Knights hooker Ellazae Elers exploited some poor spacing in the Roosters defensive line before sending lock Jarrah Young over next to the posts. The Knights were now with six at the break and right back in the game.

A smart backline move five minutes into the second half saw right centre Talia Berryman, who was having a very strong game, score out wide, and soon after a Lara Murray bomb landed in space and bounced perfectly in the arms of halfback Ngaire Jarmain. With Murray’s conversion the Roosters had an extraordinary 26-10 lead and the Roosters were heading for a major upset.

After another strong run from Knights lock Jarrah Young, halfback Sybella Pike dived over from dummy half and the Knights were still in the hunt, down by ten, with the score at 26-16.

However, the Knights comeback was extinguished immediately after. The Murray kick off was a beauty, landing just inside the touchline, 15 metres out from the Knights tryline, and the Knights couldn’t handle it. On the second tackle after the turnover Jarmain and Hall combined to send Berryman over for her second try and the Roosters were back in control, leading 30-16 with seven minutes remaining.

Murray potted a field goal, in good practice for the Grand Final, to stretch the lead to 31-16 with a few minutes to go and the Roosters had pulled off a remarkable victory.

The Grand Final will be held next Saturday at Leichhardt Oval when the Roosters play the 3rd placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. The match kicks off at 10.00 am. The teams did not clash previously in 2026.
